We had some informal awards today. It was along the lines of "biggest skank" and "most likely to have a gambling problem"..etc

Yeah. We had them today too. I got the, "most likely to be knocked up before the start of 2009" award :(
So mean.

In Years 10-12 my school only gives mid-year awards, based on Semester 1 results. Well, we also have speech night prizes, but those are separate, and it absolutely beats me how they select people for those because a lot of lower-ranked people seem to get those over higher-ranked people. For example, Mel mentioned somewhere in this thread that she never got one...when very clearly, she deserves one!!
I got a speech night academic excellence award in 2006, a year when my results were a mixture of average to outstanding and I did not get a mid-year General Academic Excellence award...whereas in 2007, when I got straight A+s all year, I got a mid-year General Academic Excellence award, but missed out on a speech night academic excellence award! I was so confused. Otherwise..mid-years - I've gotten ones for Psych Unit 1, Music U1, Methods CAS U3, Music U3, Revolutions U3, plus a few random ones from before VCE that I wouldn't care less about..

And in Grade 6, I got this community service award.. I don't know why they awarded that to me when i did no community service...

LOL..maybe they were rewarding you for doing service to the community by being well-behaved or something? For being a 'good citizen'.
My school has a 'good citizenship' award at speech night lol. I think the girl who got it didn't even understand what she had done to get it!

It's not a marketing scheme, it has many benefits and is very prestigious.

Oh yeah Joice, I picked up 1-2 subject awards per semester, but never the general academic excellence one in 6 years or a speech night prize to that effect. This is despite working at the exact same level of achievement over the 6 years as I was in November 2007.

:P *kicks school really hard*

My school has a presentation night for years 7-12, I've never been invited and my dad's a teacher at my school, says a lot about how well I've done so far. Its even funnier though, because my sister was invited every year.
