I don't think they've even finalised the course yet have they?
It'd make more sense for them to have LESS science in the post-grad course at Melbourne considering it has science prerequisites (which no other uni does).
But seriously, they're all accredited. A good course is the one that lets you in...

dont shoot the messenger...

of course no grad student is hopeless and of course all the qualifications are the same but that doesnt mean all courses are equal. i was talking about the 3rd years etc that are placed in hospitals

all im saying is that postgrad medicine seems like a better option than undergraduate medicine, but as they say, there is no accounting for taste

That makes even less sense

Melbourne and monash students are at different hospitals during all university years and the the only hospital in the state where they would have the same placement is Bendigo

Trust me, i'd have the same objections if someone came on here and said melbourne's new course will be complete inferior to monash's, it's unfounded, and some of the doctors who comment on them usually have no idea as they aren't involved in undergraduate education. But what you've said makes no sense, practical-based education is strong focal point of the monash cirriculum, and ive heard every criticism of medical students under the sun, but practical based compentence is not one really

I'm in the course, so i'm not terribly fussed, but on this very thread there are people who have received interviews for the course and are really excited about their opportunity, it seems strange that only a couple of weeks ago that you were keen to get into the same course, but now you don't care, because it's not as good as UoM anyway

once you get into a uni course, no one cares about your enter score
once you get into a job, no one cares what university you went to.

-if you really want to enter the field of medicine you would take whatever uni offered you a place. i am very grateful to have gotten an interview and happy that i have gotten this far.

if you like what you do it shouldn't make a difference.

2007- outdoor environmental studies (45)

12 years at uni?

What on earth are you on about

The selection of intern is unlike a normal job application, it is a computer matched system based on a student's and a hospital's preference. Your references are far more important to a hospital than your university

I could spend all day with you trading barbs over undergrad vd. grad, monash vs melb, becuase i've heard them all too. The most important thing is i realise that it's all complete crap made up by people who have their own self interest . .or bitterness

Good doctors/students are not held back by stereotypes, that is not held by alot in medical the profession really

Doctors do work at different hospitals, yes, but those hospitals are more likely to be in the same health group, like southern or melbourne health. A university is typically attached to the same hospital in the same group, and there are fewer doctors who work with both sets of students for a reasonable amount of time to arbitrarily decide that one group is better than another, its just assumption, usually based on a small number of students

You have't spoken to students in the new melbourne course because it doesn't exist yet and not all details been finalised yet, they are likely to be quite similar, yes, but then again, they might not

whether i should resit the umat or i should try the postgrad route (which takes longer)
Why not both?

IIRC you can sit UMAT while in an undergrad course. Then if you do well enough you could transfer to med.

also, no need to get into a bitchfight; it's perfectly possible to make your point without veiled insults.

I have not shown my alliegance at all really

You just seem to be misguided and ill-informed, and why would i be bitter, i'm in the course

I don't put any importance on where the degree comes from because i know that there are more important factors, like all my coursemates do

Say something legitimate and i will consider it, but i think you'll find that people find my opinion to be far more balanced than your own. You simply came out and said that monash students are hopeless

i did not come out and say monash students are hopeless - that was a direct quote from a doctor i spoke to who deals directly with monash students and has been involved with students from numerous overseas universities.

i may have formed views that are unbalanced, and i may be misguided and ill informed but you have done little to counter my misinformation

That's just someones opinion! How about if we went and spoke to 10 doctors and they said Monash doctors were brilliant. Does that make it true? No! It's just an opinion. If you're so easily swayed by an opinion than I fear for your future (in all respects)

From acer's umat info booklet:

Quote
UMAT is available to any candidate whose educational level at
the time of sitting the test is final year of secondary schooling
or higher.
I could well be wrong though, since this is kinda irrelevant to me.

From some of what I've read (again take it with a pinch of salt), some unis accept limited transfers, and most unis accept nonstandards. Both these don't apply to Monash in particular though.

You're being too harsh, it's a good thing that gonzo is getting out there and attempting to find the course that suits him best.

1. you can't be in an undergraduate course and sit the umat. you accept an offer for a tertiary course but must defer your studies and not have actually started uni in order to sit the umat. as soon as you start uni you basically rule out undergrad med. im pretty sure you cant transfer.

before i self destruct: i did not come out and say monash students are hopeless - that was a direct quote from a doctor i spoke to who deals directly with monash students and has been involved with students from numerous overseas universities.

You can sit the UMAT even whilst studying a teritary course as some undergrad unis will consider people with a teritary history (Monash does not).

Yeh, Newcastle or UTAS would be good options to look at for transfers
