PhB(Arts) at ANU

Hi all, does anyone know when the applications for PhB in Arts at ANU close? The form says that referee reports have to be in by 30th of November, but there's no mention of the deadline for the application itself!?

Also - do any applicants - successful or prospective - have any tips on effective writing for the "written expression sample" and the "reasons for major selection"?

Thanks in advance.

Well I think the UAC dates for applications for uni courses are pretty similar to VTAC dates, so perhaps check the UAC website.

As for the other bit, give eriny a pm, as she's doing PhB Arts right now, so she might remember ;) (we didn't have to give any samples and stuff for PhB Science.)
VCE 2006

Feel free to ask me about (advanced) mathematics.

I think it's probably safest to have all the application stuff in by the 30th of November, but I would recommend calling up the College of Arts and Social Sciences to double-check. Their number is 02 6125 2898.

Is the sample a personal statement as to why you want to do the course? If so, I recommend writing things like: you enjoy a challenge, you are interested in pursuing a higher level degree like a PhD and being a researcher, and that you can demonstrate that you could fulfill the requirements (put in examples of what you've done to show this). Basically, ANU wants graduates who will make ANU look good, so show them that.

With the majors, it kind of depends on what your major is in, but emphasise how your work will help the world/other people as well as your passion for that area. ANU seems to like that kind of stuff.

A very belated thanks for that advice eriny. Managed to submit all the stuff in on time.
Hope my ENTER makes the grade! I heard they only admit like 10 people. Competitive.

Yeah, it is pretty competitive, but a 99.65 is a great score and you're a really great candidate (especially with 2 languages and a 50 in Lit).

Nope, there is no clearly in ENTER for the PhB. Students are selected on a range of criteria. 99 is meant to be the minimum ENTER to be considered(though i know a couple who got in with high 98)

Thanks eriny. I do wish the selection criteria was a bit more straightforward though - hopefully they pay more attention to those scores, rather than scrutinise my written sample thingeh, which was both shite and trite.

I just think it'd be funny if anyone on VN did a maths subject at ANU, cos there's a good chance they'd be in my tutorial :P

lol yeah

btw I went to ANU Advisory day today and the PhB coordinator, Dr Newitt said that there is no PhB scholarship...
It was actually in the brochure, PhB Scholarship $5000, but she crossed it out and said it was a mistake.

I seem to remember there was some other scholarship that you could qualify for? It was printed on top of the application form.

Oh, they got rid of it? Apparently they've been running out of money from handing out heaps of scholarships in the last few years...

^ Crap. I guess I could apply for the Hawker scholarship, but my PhB chances are looking grim if there's no cash handout.

Just briefly, to anyone who is doing PhB(Arts) (read "Eriny"), given the expectation that you have to produce some kind of detailed research in the advanced studies courses, is it still possible to choose as your major(s) a subject you have never studied before?
I was hoping to major in French or German, which I would be beginning from scratch. Well, I am now able to struggle through academic texts in French, as I started studying a textbook designed for that purpose after VCE finished, but I doubt I'd be able to produce anything of real value before acquiring a sophisticated knowledge of the language/subject first. I imagine same would apply for subjects like Latin or psychology.
