Year 7 Math

My sister attends a rather pricey grammar school in the eastern suburbs. She is at the end of year 7 and the school is just now teaching them how to find xy when x=1 and y=2. They also have not been taught that brackets in the form 1(2) mean multiplication. Is this normal? I thought we were supposed to know this junk in year 3 or 4. What level are year 7 graduates (word used loosely) supposed to be at anyway? My class was   and combined years 7 & 8 maths into one year, so I really don't know lol

It should really be noted first of all that between when we did Year 7 Maths and now, the curriculum changed from CSF II to VELS.

But the standards can be found here: http://vels.vcaa.vic.edu.au/essential/discipline/mathematics/level5.html

I didn't learn variables and what brackets meant till year 7 I think. Or maybe it was year 8.

my brothers pretty much at the same stage (he's also in year7) so I'd assume it's normal.

I remember doing BODMAS, statistical graphs and geometry (though we probably did other stuff). I don't remember starting algebra until year 8, and even then it was just linear stuff. But then I remember doing the same thing in year 11 General Maths (it was probably a bit more difficult, though), so I don't really know how the curriculum works exactly. I think there's lots of revising what you already know.

Lol, I don't remember learning this stuff until year 11, when I actually tried to pay attention. :P

I remember first seeing graphs (y = mx+c style) in year 9. I don't remember what was year 7 and 8. In year I learnt what x was. a lot of 'find the area and perimeter' i think =/

I did y = mx + c stuff in Year 7..

That being said, I was in accelerated maths. I did Year 9 twice, lol.

edit again Here is a Year 8 maths 'exam' 1 hr long from semester 2 year 8 (private school, we did 'exams' since year 7 although it was only in year 10 they got to being proper lengths :P. Scientific calculator can be used. (I cant find a year 7 one). I dont care if I can't spell or if some of my words look dyslexic-y or if I have used the wrong word (of instead of or etc)

Section a. skills section (1 mark each)
1. Convert 83600m to km
2. Find the area of a triangle with base 4cm and height 3cm
3. Simplify 15y^3/5y^2
4. Simplify (2x^3)^4
5. According to a survey, 40% of Australians enjoy shopping. In a group of 120 people, find the number of people expected to enjoy shopping
6. Tammy got 63 out of 80 for her maths test. Find her mark as a percentage
7. A triangle with area of 77mm^2 is increased in the ratio 4:3. Find the area of the new triangle.
8. Write 1cm = 50m as a ratio scale
9. The temperature measured over a day was 19. 18, 17, 19, 15, 20, 21. Find the median temperature
10. From the boxplot above, find the range
11. Find the solution to the equation 5b-5 = 7
12. Johns height is z cm and Betty's height is 5cm less than Johns, write an expression for Betty's height.

Section b short answer
1. Evaluate (3.2E4)*(1.5E2)/(2.4E3) (1 mark)
2. Evaluate 2^2 + 3^3 (1 mark)
3. solve (2 marks each)
a) 5x + 7 - 2x + 1 = 10
b) -2(y-1)=16
c) (h-4)/3 = -10
d) 2(n+6)-2 = 4
e) 3/5 (t-2) + 10 = 20
f) 3/8 = x/4-9/16

4. Over a period of 30 days, a Fire brigade kept records of the number of times the fire engine was called out each day. The record is given below (series of numbers like 0 1 2  4 2 4  5 3 5 etc)

I remember not being challenged at all in year 7 maths, getting 100% on tests frequently. The school bumped a bunch of us into year 8 maths halfway through the year, and there I remember learning BODMAS, geometry and possibly the beginnings of linear equations (though most of that was in year 9 maths.)

The only challenging thing about year 7 maths was that they expected us to be at the standard the primary school part of my school taught at, not local goverment primary schools attempt of teaching maths.

I think I was actually a wake up call being a clear 100% all the time prodigy type person who was looking blankly at things going 'i've never seen this before' because they just assumed we did and we clearly weren't paying attention in primary school x_o

We did BODMAS in year 5 and learnt how to factorise, expand and draw quadratics in year 9.

I don't think I could get 100% in caramel's year 8 exam posted above.

I wasn't in the accelerated maths class in year 8 however I was aware that they had covered the concepts up to completing the square at the end of the year.

I got 100% on it :P

Completing the square was in year 9 for me. It seems everything in maths was in year 9 o_O
