Just go on with Unit 3?
« on: December 02, 2008, 05:38:05 pm »

Is it okay to just go on with unit 3 if there are things in units 1 and 2 that needs brushing up on?
For example, I've forgotten most of unit 1 and still a bit unfamiliar with redox chemistry.

Can I go on reading Unit 3 stuff and pick up the necessary knowledge on the way (or is this not a good idea as a very well established basic knowledge is required)?

Thanks

Yes
If you're using the heinemann book they have revision chapters on what you need to know anyway(acid/base, redox, basics).
I got 54% in my unit 2 exam and got an A for unit 3.
You don't really need anything from unit 1 anyway :S

Because I've got this book that's meant to prepare you for unit 3/4 and it's got so many things from Unit 1/2 (probably everything) :S
Made me wonder

unit 1/2 is very important to 3/4, but not as explicitly like physics

the foundation set up in 1/2 is critical for proper understanding of concepts in 3/4

Huh? Are you saying you have heinemann? :P If so you will be fine, it will all come back to you anyway and if you have any questions just ask people on here, it will make sense, trust me. I was lost when I started unit 3 as well, and the fact that you have more motivation than I ever had reinforces my opinion :P.

Would you say everything in units 1/2 is very important? There's time but I'd rather not read through a whole year's worth of material again (sounding a bit lazy, I know :( )

Thanks for the reassurance. Hope you're right :)

no, that would take too long, but knowing 1/2 would be very useful. Just go on with learning, and if it doesn't work so well, hire a tutor.

I wouldn't recommend that you spend time reading unit 1/2 stuff =_= more than half the stuff is irrelevant, and stuff which does help you either go over again in your book or just gives you a tiny amount of insight as to why some things are what they are.

You should've made notes for the Unit 1/2 stuff :P But I don't think there's any point revising stoich, everything is covered in the first couple of chapters of a textbook for 3/4. If you want to revise atomic orbitals/subshells it might be worth it because there's a bit of that in spectroscopy

Ah great, thank you. Fortunately I still remember the orbitals and subshell stuff. ;D

oh and galvanic cells would be useful to revise for Unit 4, but again, your 3/4 textbook should cover what you need to know anyway
