Official FSN practise exams.

I'm going to be producing some FSN practise exams for 2008 for Methods and Specialist. There are going to be two difficulties. One will be VCAA standard (or as close to as possible), the other will be above VCAA standard (this one will be clearly marked as a challenge, to be attempted by those who wish to seek out something harder). I'm just curious as to what you guys want to see changed in your experiences from practise exams. I.E. ways they could be improved. They'll mainly be used as publicity papers given free to schools with the stipulation that they include our cover on it with the big "WWW.FREESTUDYNOTES.COM" address emblazoned on the front and a little spiel about what we are. I hope to make the exams as good as possible in order to attract as many people as possible. OH OH and suggest scenarios for the application questions! If I like them, I'll do it. Don't actually suggest how to do it mathematically. Just suggest a scene played out in real life and I'll try to make something of it. So, yeah, suggestions? (Also, you guys will get advanced copies if you want. But, I doubt by the time they're first ready for release you'll be in revision mode yet. :P)

Fyrefly's vodka is spilling all over the kitchen sink. If the oh-so-precious vodka is flowing into the sink @ a rate of .3 L/m and flowing out through the drain @ a rate of .2 L/m, set up the differential equation depicting this scenario, assuming there was no damn vodka in the sink to begin with  ;)

Fyrefly gets another bottle of vodka and a 2.5L bottle of passionfruit soft drink. If she mixes it @ a ratio of 1:20 (not including ice) and drinks it @ a rate of 1 sip/minute, how fast can Jess get smashed?  :buck2: :P

In all seriousness, I like the idea for some trial exams. Probably best not to stick with my vodka idea tho :coolsmiley: If I think of anything decent, I'll post...

Chris and Marie want to move a tree from *somewhere* to *somewhere* so the neighbours can't see Chris in his tutu (maybe you should cut that last bit XD, or make their intentions marketing orientated where they're trying to draw customers in). The tree is x m tall, the ramp they want to move it down can be described by equation y = blah and the height of the damaged roof can be described by equation blah (maybe use an inverse cos graph or something to make it a 'specialists' question).

You could go all integration on the '08 students sorry asses and get them to find the max possible height of the tree, etc.

Astronauts are running out of air. Volume of oxygen tank question could lead onto a rates question finding out how long the air will last (will they have enough air to be able to wait for the orbital tragetory they need?), which could lead onto a trig question where they re-enter Earth's orbit, which could lead on to a vectors question about landing.

More random scenarios... hockey game, moving trucks, basketball game (opponents have rigged the goal during half-time @ 1 end so the ball is slightly larger than the ring and can't go through..?), playing chess on a train (train is going up hill etc, 1 player accuses the other player of cheating, the other player said the piece moved on its own and denies cheating ...question about friction, vectors, mechanics etc ...was the piece really light enough to move forward on its own as the train went up the hill?).

I can't think of any complex numbers scenarios, but then again I hate complex numbers. Maybe some phenomenon where the data defies current knowledge ...black holes, something travelling faster than light, ummm... for some reason the bermuda triangle came to mind.

Hope that gets the ball rolling a bit for you  :)

Enwiabe, why has your stance changed since then?
I KNEW it had, now I have proof :D

Also, respond to this:

Why do you allow/encourage us to plagurise, whether it be VCE exams or otherwise?

This is a slightly more visible thread so please dignify it with a response.

let him be. nobody really cares, and the people who do really care* would find a way to resource central.

Mao to be honest I don't understand your post
I care.
Does 'the people who do really care' refer to people who want exams or to me?
The only way the end of the sentence makes sense is if I take the first meaning, but the only way the pm bit makes sense if if I take the second

Edit: enwiabe has seen my post numerous times and is not dignifying it with a response, I doubt PM will change anything. If he wants to he can contact me via any means, but I want to publicly ask why and to show his non-response to a serious issue. If he ever does reply privately then I will say publically that I have received such correspondance and won't post any more publicly about it.
This thread is much more visible than the other one :)
