Global Warming, Global Stupidity

...that's what Alex Birch says: http://www.corrupt.org/articles/politics/alex_birch/global_warming_global_stupidity

Greenism is today is not about the environment. It's a political and social trend, a lifestyle...

...These pretentious idiots are too directionless to achieve anything more than to whine and protest. They'll grow tired when something else comes long that they can moan about.

He sounds angry, that's for sure. What do you guys think about this article? Is there any truth behind it?

It reminds me of a really interesting article I read (HS, i think) about those green bags, and how they aren't really enviro-friendly but we just use them cos it makes us feel good to think we are doing something positive for the environment, so that we can jump into our petrol-guzzling cars etc with our green bags and not have it on our conscience. hm

edit:bahah waiit i haven't exactly read the article yet. I was just going from what you quoted

ok read it.
"In democratic societies, truth only appears when it's trendy."

i find it absurd to be argueing against sound scientific evidence, e.g. glacial melting, average temperature rises, CO2 readings, etc..
especially when those are compared with thousands of years of data perserved in the ice, and now all of a sudden the readings are off the chart (i was converted by "the inconvenient truth")

the truth may be trendy, but that doesnt make it any less than truth...

John Stossel believes that the causation is unclear. CO2 is correlated with temperature rise, but if you look closely, sometimes you'll see the temperature rise happens before the increases in CO2. This doesn't imply that CO2 causes temperature rises, it could imply the converse however.

John Stossel questions the idea that the "debate is over," and says that there needs to be more scepticism and more verified research.

sure, but the graph of ave temperature itself is alarming, the "disproof" of CO2 contributing to global warming doesnt make it any less serious
much alike cutting off one of a serial murderer's finger doesnt make him any less dangerous

Uhm, I think you are missing the point. If CO2 is disproved as the cause of rising temperature, then it means that we can't control it. It means cutting greenhouse emissions has no effect whatsoever!

'An Inconvenient Truth' is good but It's not the Bible. It is set out in a way as to give it extra credibility and seem like those are hard facts used to promote its ideas but in fact it continuously fails to look at the big picture. Things such as what coblin mentioned, historical glacial melting as part of the earths natural cycle and very similar hot-eras in the past are carefully avoided and not mentioned at all.

I totally believe in Global Warming, but i do agree that its become a trend. Much like how being anti-Bush is/was a trend.

No one denies the existence of global warming: whether it is caused by man or not, is a different issue.

even with that said, it's not any less dangerous, regardless of how it's caused (or how the cycle happen)

its time people should realise that politics behind the global warming issue doesnt solve anything, maybe it's time people take a new focus. even IF (thats a big if) global warming is not man-caused, we still need to do a shitload of work to protect ourselves (and possibly more)
