These sort of crimes that are motivated by greed are really only possible with the government intervention that allows power to concentrate in the hands of few.

Greed has productive use, but only in a competitive market.

Greed is the desire to pursue your own interests. To pursue your own interests, you usually must pay for it. So, you must provide a cheap and quality service to consumers to get some money. That is how most major companies make money and pursue their own interests. That is how ordinary workers make money and pursue their own interests.

There is nothing wrong with this system as long as they don't go to the government to distort the rules and get some help to distort the balance of power.

I don't know if he was greedy or not. He could have been. He could have also been pretty desperate. Frankly, I feel sorry for him. He was obviously an intelligent guy and a convincing leader, but now his future isn't so bright. It just seems like a waste of talent...

http://www.theage.com.au/news/national/former-student-union-head-jailed-for-180000-tax-fraud/2008/02/06/1202233951260.html

"He spent $120,000 on gambling and the rest on car repayments and living expenses. He has repaid only $800."

"The union collapsed into administration in 2004 after auditors identified a $46 million potential liability from a secret 20-year deal for the union to lease student apartments from a company partly controlled by a former student politician."

As Lord Acton said: power corrupts and absolutely power corrupts absolutely.

I feel zero sympathy for such scum. A HECS style debt equivalent to what he swindled should be imposed on his head.

beh, you can disagree with what a person does and still feel sorry for them. Someone who spends that much gambling clearly has a problem.
