Petition to change upcoming p-plate laws.

This has been going around myspace tonight:

Quote
The choice of driving with our mates should be decided by us. Not the government.
How many people aged 18 and under, imagine themselves cruising with mates, doing the odd blocky or two?
(You must be dreaming)
What about the end of year 12 road trip?
(Forget it now and it's less disappointing)
Not only that, but what about the big fuss that modern society is making about the environment?

If we are becoming a more environmentally aware nation, then wouldn't it be a dumb idea to cut the number of passengers in our cars?
It's only going to increase the number of P-platers on the roads (increase in traffic = higher chance of an incident and an increased deterioration rate of the environment) as people who do decide to drive to parties, will only be able to carry one passenger (aged 16 to 21).
Instead of 5 people turning up in a car, only 2 will arrive. not only will this make it harder for you and your friends to get to the party, but it will increase the number of those who cannot drink and the number of cars at the event.
I dont know how others feel, but I believe one of the best parts of a party is the car trip. Having four of your mates in the car is the best way to get yourself excited beforehand, and then chat about the events of the night afterwards and cool down.
All of my friends love to have a few drinks, yet if they have to start driving as well, that will be the end of that. 1 in every 2 people will have to be a designated driver, unless someone is kind enough to make 3000 trips all over the country dropping their friends home.
Our rights as teenagers are slowly being diminished by the government. Not only the government, but the adults of our society who make decisions on our behalf. As if we aren't old enough to make our own decisions. We haven't spent nearly 13 years in school not to have learnt anything. We may not all be smart enough to get a 50 in all of our exams and finish with a score of 99.9stupid for our VCE, but we're smart enough to make our own decisions.

If you wish to stand up for our rights as teenagers and stand up for the right to drive with your friends, then please go to this website :

http://www.petitiononline.com/ppltlaws/petition.html

and sign the petition to withdraw the new laws.

Repost this as many times as you like and to anyone. Repost it any where you like. Send it in comments, messages, scream it out of the windows of your bus on the way to school, I don't care how, just try and get as many people to sign it as possible. This is our future, it's time we took control of it.

If you do not repost this bulletin, your rights to drive with your mates will vanish into thin air as of the 1st of July 2008. I shit you not.

Go petition if you agree.
Let's have some discussion about this.

Yeah it seems pretty unnecessary to me. Just keep punishments for accidents high.

Imagine this: The law says you are only allowed one passenger to reduce the number of young fatalities. So your the desi, and you take your extremely drunk friend home from the pub. He tells you to see how fast your 1989 commodore can go. After much encouragement, you floor it. You hit a tree while at 140 kmh and both of you die. Number of fatalities = 2

Now imagine this: The law says you can have a full car. So your the desi, and you take an extremely drunk friend, and 2 other moderately drunk friends home from the pub. Your extremely drunk friend tells you to see how fast your 1989 commodore can go. The other 2 friends tell him to shut up. You get home safely. Number of fatalities = 0

Just to add to that;
Imagine this: You go to the pub, and due to the new laws there are 5x as many cars, you're driving home, you aren't drunk but other drivers on the road coming from the pub are, and due to the new laws theres 5x as many drunk drivers, doesn't that mean there will be an increase in fatal road accidents?

The good news is that people like myself who got their Ps before July of this year will be exempt, as this rule only applies to those who will be on a P1 licence (those currently on their Ps will be on a P2 licence under the new system). A more effective alternative is to apply this penalty on those drivers that have incurred any demerits during their probationary period, and have this in place for a fixed period, i.e. 12 months or so. This new rule as it stands now puts responsible young drivers at a disadvantage, by effectively classing them amongst the P plate hoons that exist.

if we get our Ps before 1st July we're exempt from the new laws, because we have a regular probationary licence rather than P1 or whatever the new one is...
so i think i'll book now for 30th june!
anyone know if there's a cancellation fee in case i get to the date and realise i still can't park?

how about if you fail bec?
Would you then be required to sit your test under the new laws system?

well yeah i would! but if i fail then i'd probably deserve to have ridiculous laws imposed on me!

i just sent vicroads an email asking them if there's a cancellation fee, and also another question:
if i get my automatic licence before 1st July, then sit the auto-manual conversion test after that date, what bracket does my licence fall under? Can i have more than one passenger in an auto car, but not a manual? can i always have more than one passenger? can i never have more than one passenger?
strangely, i couldn't find any info about this in the vicroads site - i'm interested to see what they say.

if someone at vicroads reads that their brain will fry!  im confused myself :P

but i think when you sit your manuals test, you are still under the old system because you get your fulls 3 years from the day you did your auto.
