Do we have to all go out and buy new P-plates...? I hadn't figured out whether we had to or not...

Yes we (we = EVERY current P-plater) do, which is why i think demand for green p plates (the item, not the licence) will be quite high

Mmm.. I must have missed that. You're right then. There will be an increase in demand, but the prices will not be unjustified (not extortion from stores or anything - just simply supply and demand). The licensing (government policy) itself may be.

Obtained from Graduated Licensing System website ( http://gls.arrivealive.vic.gov.au/prelearner/key_changes/going-green-for-red-p-plate-drivers.html ):

"GOING GREEN FOR RED P PLATE DRIVERS
Victoria's new graduated licensing system is introducing new driver licensing rules. These new rules mean that a probationary driver will have to display either a red or green P plate.

If you obtained your probationary licence before 1 July 2008, you will have to change your P plate from red to green.

A green P plate driver has fewer restrictions such as how many passengers they can carry.

Attach your green P plates so they are clearly visible on your vehicle, and make sure you do not use them before 1 July  2008."

And no Jo, I make useful posts ...mostly :P ;)

In my random googling (because I don't have to go to work for another hour yet...) I've found a link that may answer a lot of people's questions:

http://gls.arrivealive.vic.gov.au/component/option,com_fastfacts/Itemid,140/

You fill in your own circumstances and it explains how the new rules affect you personally.

"Thanks for your 'Fast Facts' inquiry. As you are 18 - 21 years old and you obtained your probationary licence after 1 July 2007 but before 1 July 2008, then the following rules apply to you:

    * You must stay on your probationary licence for at least three years.
    * If you were tested in a car with automatic transmission, then you can only drive this type of car.
    * You must comply with restrictions on driving high powered vehicles. Click here for the restrictions that apply to you.
    * You must have a zero blood alcohol concentration (BAC) whenever you drive
    * If you are convicted of a drink driving offence involving a BAC of .07 or higher, you must have an alcohol interlock fitted to your car for a minimum of six months when you return to driving.
    * You must display your red P plates on the front and back of any car you drive.
    * From 1 July 2008, you must display a green P plate, not a red one.
    * You must carry your probationary licence with you whenever you drive.
    * If you incur five or more demerit points in 12 months, or 12 or more in three years, your probationary licence may be suspended.

After at least three years on your probationary licence, you will be eligible to obtain a full driver licence."

Wait... wait... Excal's "Are you trying to increase your post count?" comment was directed at you, not me? Now I am confused... but... *this is taking all my thinking power in my tired state* ...so Excal wasn't making fun of me trying to increase my post count when I don't care about it? I mean, my I-don't-careness (again, tired state, don't expect me to be literate or make total sense right now) is pretty obvious all factors considered. You know what I don't get... why does anyone care about what their post count is anyway? Anyway... if anyone was trying to get their post count up, it was you Jo!! Don't lie... you wanted 700 posts, I know the truth!!

I researched and ended up answering my own question anyway, which I posted ...albeit after you both answered my question (without evidence... which brendan would slaughter you for :P).

You know what? I know there's no point in posting this incoherent piece of trash, but I figure it gives a useful insight into the effects of sleep deprivation ...and I'm sure Mao will have a good laugh when he floats in here.

edit: Yes, I know it's only 8pm.

Back on topic... if there ever was a topic... oh yeah, those green thingys.

VicRoads will mail a pair of new green P plates to all probationary licence holders in Victoria who are currently on red P plates. There is no charge for these green P plates.

Finally something good about this new system. Glad to hear that my problem/query is solved.

Wasted taxpayer's money.

Considering how much it costs to get a licence ($100+), getting P-plates from the government isnt that much of a freebie

Has anyone recieved the Green Ps yet?

Just found this on a victorian government website:
Quote
A green P package, including a pair of green P plates and information explaining these changes is now being mailed to the 250,000 probationary licence holders in Victoria.

If a probationary driver, motorcyclist or scooter rider has not received their free green P plates by 20 June, they should contact their local VicRoads Customer Service Centre.

Its the 9th today, so i'd expect most will arrive this week
