New Driving System

Ok I've been looking around on the VicRoads website but it's not too clear.
I got my learner's permit in January 07. My 18th birthday is June 16th and I need to have my Ps by August 8th.

VicRoads:
Quote
If you have obtained your learner permit before 1 July 2007, the current rules will continue to apply. This means you will not be required to complete 120 hours of supervised driving, nor submit an official learner logbook. However it is important that you get as much driving experience as possible, 120 hours at least, so that you become a safer driver, before you take the on-road test.

However on the new liscensing system website it says:
Quote
From 1 July 2008, all new probationary drivers will be covered by a two stage, four year licence system. They’ll have a P1 licence (shown by a red P plate) for the first 12 months, followed by a P2 licence (green P plate) for the next three years. If they’re over 21 they will move straight to a P2 licence.

So does this mean if I get my Ps after July I'll be on the old or the new system. Coz there's no way I can get 120 hours and I don't have the new logbook or anything. :(

I believe this is correct.

You won't need to submit the logbook, but you'll be under the new P-plate system.

I wonder if us current P platers (old system - red) will need to buy green plates so we don't get confused for nublet P-platers :P (and get pulled over for stuff that was otherwise legitimate).

Definitely correct. You wont need to submit a log book, but you will have to be under the 2 stage licence system

Yeah, we'll have to change colour. Makes more sense for us to keep the red plates though.

I was reading up on the new laws and was surprised to see that P1 is red plates. It makes a lot more sense to make P2 red plates, and have P1 as green. Although, the concept came from the same people who thought of the passenger restriction laws, so its not that surprising to see them forego logic.

Will I be able to move straight onto the green plates in July even though I would only have been on my Ps for a few months? This is going to be a logistical nightmare. I can only imagine how many current P platers aren't going to change their plates in July.
