I heard from my former chem tutor (who lectures optom @ UoM) that these days the ENTER required is in the high 99s...not sure how much truth there is to that though! So hopefully someone who actually knows will answer =]

ENTER would probably be 99+. UMAT is variable, depends on your WUMAT(double s1 score+other scores).

Also IIRC the way Melb does it is to take 3 streams of students: TER, WUMAT and TER+WUMAT

TER stream is for 25% of places, taking the people with the highest TER score as long as they satisfy the WUMAT prerequisite. Same in reverse for the WUMAT stream.

TER+WUMAT takes both into consideration with stronger emphasis on the TER score, this comprises the remaining 50% of places.

That means he probably got in through the WUMAT stream.

Also, is he paying full-fee? Would explain a lot.

not sure about the full-fee, he could be. But still, optometry wouldn't be as hard to get into as medicine? i know they're practically in the same field but the demand for optometry wouldn't be as high that the ENTER requirement would exceed 99 or even 98, unless i'm mistaken.

No, it wasn't as hard to get into as UniMelb med used to be, but only fractionally easier. As in e.g., instead of 99.8+ TER, you only need 99.65+ TER.

Demand for optometry is fairly high. UniMelb optom is the only optometry course in Victoria, and one of only about ~3,4 in Australia IIRC. Total graduates Australia-wide are less than 200-300.
