*going past a car full of bogan-looking people hanging around the park at night, carrying glowsticks*

ninwa: "they were sticks which glowed..."
enwiabe: "yeah... glowsticks"
ninwa: "maybe they were lightsabers! ha ha!"
enwiabe: "I hope not. I would fear for the future of the Jedi legacy"
ninwa: "... wow, your geekiness knows no bounds"
enwiabe: "yes it does. it has an upper bound of 2, and a lower bound of 0 HAR HAR HAR I'M SO FUNNY"
ninwa: /facepalm (yes I actually did facepalm)

[20:24] <ahmad> what age is pedo
[20:24] <ahmad> what's the age differential for pedo
[20:25] <ninwa> depends on your age
[20:25] <ahmad> we need some sort of metric
[20:25] <ahmad> what about (age2 - age1)/age2
[20:26] <moofinhero> what
[20:26] <ahmad> so for applethief (19-16)/19 = 3/19 ~ 16% pedo
[20:26] <moofinhero> depends on age
[20:26] <ahmad> yeah, this depends on age!
[20:26] <ahmad> like if it was (5 - 2)/5 = 3/5 ~ 60% pedo
[20:27] <ahmad> vs 16% for applethief
[20:27] <ninwa> ahmad's theorem for calculating the pedo-ness of a person

But Ahmad is a pure mathematician not an applied one... is the line between the two fields beginning to blur?

Not a metric - it fails on all three counts (positivity, symmetry, and triangle inequality). However, it's not hard to see that

is a metric on the space . Of course, you don't really want symmetry in a paedometer, so a metric's probably not the way to go about it.

I meant metric as a way of measuring rather than the full blown mathematical notion of it (I wasn't thinking of maths at the time, it just kinda.. happened) :P
