The question is: what does the result look like after run-off voting?

That is, who would the voters who voted for the other candidates vote for?

And it's not the case that Mao or coblin have to be the winner. If everyone had a second preference on caramel, for example, she can come first after a few rounds of voting.

To do this, we eliminate all the candidates who got the lowest number of votes (1), and re-allocate their votes to their second preferences. Repeat until a candidate achieves a majority of the votes. Interestingly, the Australian polling system uses the STV, which does this the most effectively.
