Don't get me wrong, it is still great to ask seemingly inapplicable (to life) questions (i.e.: pure mathematics), but if the respondents are so dogmatic about it, it is really not worth it (to me).

I would gladly talk to you about it over a coffee, for example (hypothetically speaking - not asking ya out :P).

ninwa shut the fuck up i have no idea who 'mr newton' or 'mr barton' is, and the rest of u simply don't understand how to deal with arguements u just start crying about grammar and taking jokes personally, none of u adressed any of my points simply misinterpret things and provide straw man responses regardless of how many times i repeat my self...............like this debate has been had many times and every single time rationality and reason has prevailed over superstition and religion...BECAUSE U CAN NOT ARGUE (intelligently atleast) BELIEF IN A GOD FROM A REASONED STANCE BECAUSE IT IS IS NOT DERIVED FROM A REASONED ENDEVOUR.
If you really want to continue a proper discussion; answer the following; what would make you reject the belief that a god is likely to exist (or there are good reasons to believe in god) and that you should not live your life accordingly?.
(or more crudley put) What would convert you to an atheist?.
And if your god commanded you (through whatever form of communication) to kill your family would you do it?

Slightly on topic: Religion is productive, yet not essential. I think I read somewhere that people who believe in religion live a longer, and more fulfilling life? Evidence someone?

Of course they do.  They live in heaven forever, and heaven is more fulfilling then hell.

mate there is no point debating with an immature looser who certainly does not know what a formal debate is. There's no need to cry if you feel insecure about yourself but don't let it out on others. Also i would mention that excal most likely did not google ad hominem just to use it for this argument as he has used it several times before, prior to this argument (plus his quite intelligent).
oh and did you google straw man? You must of googled it considering your grammatically inaccuracies.
I must also add, this debate is no longer on religion/atheism etc etc due to your childish and puerile behavior. You will never earn respect this way and i suggest you change the way you behave. People don't win debates by swearing and carrying on like a constipated 10 year old.

To answer your above highlighted question; well i find it very controversial. Firstly, for me to convert to an atheist i would either have to die and then convert after finding out we will just rot in the ground OR somehow someone undisputedly finds evidence against any existence of god and evidence to suggest that Christianity is just a joke such as early writings of authors of the bible stipulating that it is just a joke which i find laughable but this is what it would take to convert me to an atheist.

Your second question poses for a number of questions. Firstly, if you don't believe in god then how can god exist to ask any question for that matter? Secondly, such a question would go against all of gods teachings so why would god ask such a question in the first place?1 John 3:15 "Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life in him."
So realistically, *if* such a command was given, i would say no for one reason. This would not be god asking the question, it would be the complete opposite of god as we know it. *God lays human foundations on love and peace so giving such a command would contradict our very belief of god which we know is nothing but of love for your family and your neighbor.

today's society certainly has deviated from the love and peace ;P

I think Andrew Norton had some evidence of that on his blog: andrewnorton.info

Here is one post i found:

Does religion make you happy?

really?

i dont think believing in something therefore gives a longer life? :s

people choose to, or not to believe in a god.

ultimately its there choice.

some people are say for instance are catholic, but dont believe there is a god.

How intellectually lazy..
"think I read somewhere that people who believe in religion live a longer, and more fulfilling life? Evidence someone?"
even though i highly doubt the validity of such a claim, if it were true, it would in no way lend credence to such religious doctrines.

I didnt realize people took this forum so seriously, and am really embarrased to see that you are getting all flustered and mad at Atyler, all posts in support for religion are devoid of coherant rebuttals and intellect.....makes me cringe

She means some people are catholic (or like to consider themselves Catholic) but if you ask them if they believe in God they'd say no.

Half of the people at my Catholic school said they don't believe in god, yet they still call themselves catholic.

I agree. There are people that practice the religion & people who don't. It is freedom of choice. You can't force somebody to be a practising Muslim/Christian/Jew or force them to quit practising.

This thread started like 3 days ago and now its already 10 pages long.

The other epic religion thread (with my very intelligent contributions  :P) can be found here: http://vcenotes.com/forum/index.php/topic,421.0.html

Incidentally that religion thread started close to exactly a year ago.
