TSFX Summer School 2009

Hey everyone, I was just wondering for those of you who have been to TSFX's Summer School whether you know what the class sizes usually are? I've gone through the TSFX Forum however much of its to do with weekly tuition and the past lectures. Also any input on whether it's really worth the amount of money or not, as in how would you rate the teachers and notes for certain subjects. Cheers everyone :)

Ok thanks. Someone mentioned it wasn't worth it going to a lecture on something you will learn at school later anyway, however I believe if you can get a head start on something, and practically relearn it again later, it can substantially be of benefit. Repetition is an important key in learning concepts, and if you start early it can be beneficial. I guess in the end its just up to whether the person him/herself rates the cost against the benefit of the program. Anyway some good info, but still nothing on class sizes and comments on the quality of teachers and notes. Cheers for the quick reply though (Y)

It just depends what kind of learner you are. Like you said, some people need continual repetition to drill things into their heads, whereas others can just read it once, understand it and move on. Hopefully you know which type of learner you are already as this'll help you in VCE. As for the quality of teachers, I haven't had the greatest experience with TSFX teachers. They're quite draining and just read straight from the notes mostly. However, the notes are quite good and cover the entire course, so I'd say they're a good basis for RE-SUMMARISING and adding to your own notes as they're like a few hundred pages long.

I've never been to the summer school, only the lectures and the master classes, and that was around...20ish?

I've also never been to summer school, but I heard that the class sizes of summer school ranges from 100 to 200 (since its in a university lecture theatre?).

I've read some of my friend's notes when she went to summer school for Chemistry and Methods and they were quite good :)

Woah, so its a mass audience. Oh well hopefully the notes are good. They might come in handy later in the year. Thanks for the info.

Yeah I went to TSFX last year, the class sizes are pretty big for summer school.

Most important thing I think is that you are fully alert while at the lectures, with good seats, otherwise you'll be essentially wasting your time, and just paying for notes. Some of the teachers are really good, especially the physics teacher from Haileybury. Some aren't so good.

I'm going to Methods, Chem, and Physics this year. I got smart friends going this time, so hopefully they can explain stuff when I get completely lost. If you don't understand things during the lectures it feels like you're just blindly writing notes, which isn't that helpful.

I'm going to physics and spesh, looking forward to it, I didn't realise the classes were "lecture sized", don't really mind though. Can anyone suggest what I should bring?(notebook, textbook, calc etc)

You'll spend most of the time highlighting and copying down examples into the notes they give you. I don't think you need notebooks/textbooks. Calculators are useful.

The lecture is really all them writing on their overhead projector things and you copying stuff down/highlighting
