haha oh catherine deveny, look i think she is pretty funny i admit! man it was just hilarious when we read one of her articles in english, she was just bagging the shit out of people who do their deb balls, and everyone got so offended haha!

Catherine Deveny (10/12, Opinion) explains her position as follows:

"It's wrong and unfair for any child to have a better resourced school
than another."

Essentially, Ms Deveny does not want to allow people to spend their own
money on their own children. I suppose it is better for them to spend
money on riotous living. But better school facilities? Absolutely not!

Ms Deveny's one-size-fits-all principle has many implications. For
example, why should wealthier parents be allowed to hire private tutors
for their kids? Or give them music lessons? Or give them anything that
another parent may not give to their own child? If Ms Deveny thinks that
people should not be able to spend their own money to improve the lives of
their own children, this is only the first step of a much larger project.

Hey, just because someone doesn't agree with you opinion, doesn't mean their pieces are instantly 'crap'. Rather, other aspects of their writing make it crap (unsubstantiated claims, lack of clarity, etc.). Great minds are famous for differing, and it does one well not to just instantly dismiss something they don't agree with as 'crap', but instead to actually engage with it (e.g. Brendan's act of writing a letter to the editor).

One thing i hate is the way she uses exaggeration and sometimes sarcasm to make points, so that when someone calls her on it ( that is to substantiate her point with some evidence) she can just reply with "oh no i wasn't being serious, i was exaggerating/being sarcastic".

Here is a case in point:
"How much do you reckon your house is worth these days? I'll bet you a tank of petrol it's worth less than two chocolate bars for $3"
She is arguing that house prices have fallen by a large magnitude, but provides no evidence whatsoever.

I was simply delighted when we had one of Deveny's articles to analyse during our language analysis SAC mainly due to the fact that she employs a wide range of persuasive techniques (at times) during her "sarcastic bitching".
