Asif awful ending =O
I thought ~AS~ ending was perfect.
Sorry to revive an old discussion, but having just watched both Clannad and Clannad AS (and having absolutely loved it), I would like opinions on the ending of Clannad AS.
**SPOILER ALERT**SPOILER ALERT**SPOILER ALERT**
People will often allude to the 'deus ex machina' plot device in reference to the ending and I don't think it is entirely justified. Yes, it is very sudden and even though I had sort of anticipated Nagisa's return, I was still taken aback. HOWEVER, contrary to what many people think, I think the way in which story plays out in episode 22 doesn't break or bend any of the laws set within the anime.
If I am not mistaken, Okazaki's efforts to help out those who are close to him and his actions in general, are what make the return of Nagisa and Ushio possible. It is established, well before Nagisa's death, the wish granting capabilities of the light orbs (which in Okazaki's case, have been obtained by the happiness of others as a result of his actions).
It is great how seemingly unrelated and irrelevant parts of the story, glue the story together in the end. Having said that, exactly how the light orbs work and the link between the Clannad universe and the illusionary world remain a bit of a mystery to me but I hope that by re-watching the series as well as playing the VN I will achieve a clearer understanding. Having read through this thread, I understand that TrueTears has watched these series several times, so I would appreciate your input and opinion and perhaps an explanation of the mechanics and function of the illusionary world and explanations of the other hard to understand aspects of the story.
