West Bank land for Jewish settlers
February 17, 2009
THE Israeli Civil Administration, which runs the country's occupation of the West Bank, has declared 170 hectares in the occupied territory "state land", paving the way for a new Jewish settlement.
There are plans to build 2500 houses on the land, north of the Israeli settlement of Efrat.
Under the two-state solution agreed to by Israel at the 2007 Middle East peace conference in Annapolis, the West Bank and Gaza will form a Palestinian state. The international community considers all Israeli settlements beyond the pre-1967 war border to be illegal, but about 285,000 Jewish Israelis now live in more than 100 settlements spread across the West Bank, and a further 200,000 Jewish settlers live in East Jerusalem (above).
In 2008, 1518 new structures were built in the West Bank. About 15,000 new settlers moved into the West Bank in 2008.
