umm, just a friendly reminder: if tobacco accounts for 80% of all drug and alcohol related death, it means that cannabis related deaths are less than 20% of total, or less than 1/4 of tobacco related deaths..

- There are other possible causes for schizophrenia which means you can't put deaths from schizophrenia-related things into your dataset, because we can't determine at the moment if a particular person got schizophrenia because of cannabis use.
so then how do you conclude that weed causes schizo?

By citing reputable research that suggests such?

what? the reputable citing does not prove that weed causes schizo. read it first.

"accounting for 80% of all drug- or alcohol-related deaths."

I'm sure tobacco related deaths aren't on the spot sudden deaths!!!

I was going to edit to make my point clearer.

Your statistics are interesting, shocking in some respects, but it's logical structure is as good as Andrew Bolt reasoning i.e. pretty crap. The statistics don't make a comparison between I suppose the burden of tobacco/alcohol usage compared to cannabis usage, which is what you want if you want to say that tobacco is more dangerous than cannabis.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I *think* Glockmeister is saying to take into account the number of people who use tobacco/alcohol compared to cannabis. The fact that it accounts for 80% of deaths does not in of itself support the assertion that tobacco/alcohol is more dangerous than cannabis. If a lot more people used tobacco/alcohol then obviously a lot more people are going to die from it. To get any sort of meaning from those statistics, you'd need to find out what percentage of people use tobacco/alcohol on a regular basis compared with the percentage of people who use cannabis on a regular basis, and work out what percentage of users of each drug die.

Apologies if I've got that completely wrong Glockmeister, didn't get much sleep last night :P

You make a whole lot more sense than those who say "deaths from tobacco > deaths from weed; therefore/that is all the evidence you need to conclude that 'weed is more dangerous'". Longbows have killed more people than nukes; if a country was Australia's sworn enemy, which armament would you prefer it to attain?

you just contradicted yourself. First you say the reputable citing proved that weed causes schizophrenia, then you go the reputable citing does not prove that weed causes schizophrenia but rather suggests. Well then if he suggests, then i can't see any real evidence to conclude that if you smoke weed, you will become a schizo. It's more, it may.

We use the word "suggests" due to the epistemological issues in using the term "proves", which could take a VERY long time to explain.

The bit I've boldened in the story is what I want to discuss here.

WTF? Why has he been refused bail?
Sorry to revive old thread :P but I've finally found the answer! :D

Bail Act 1977 (Vic) ss4(2)(i) and (ia) states that a court shall refuse bail if the person is charged with drug trafficking / drug-related offences.

Or even better - drugs have killed more people than lethal injections, does that mean that drugs are more dangerous? :P

Though, I like the whole 'army of snipers' vs. the nuke analogy....

... food poisoning has killed more people than blowfish
therefore, don't worry about eating blowfish, [even if it hasn't been prepared by a certified chef]
