footers are different from footnotes i think. As footnotes are numbered with the relevant quotes/sources on the other hand footers are on the bottom of every page of a document.

Alternatively in word 07 you go to references then click Insert Footnote.

Just delete the number assigned after your quote and word will delete that footnote and change the numbering of the other footnotes accordingly.
