Clueless on electives and uni courses, help needed!!

I'm hoping somebody can help me in regards to electives within certain degrees.

At uni, ideally at some point I'd love to study Italian, but it appears the only way I can do this is by doing a Bachelor of Arts. I'm leaning towards a Bachelor of Business, but I was hoping there is a way to do Italian without doing an Arts course (double degree).

Would I be able to take Italian as an elective in the business degree? Or are languages never offered in courses other than arts?

hopefully somebody will be able to help, and maybe suggest something =D

Btw, not really interested in Monash/Melb Uni as I will not get into them. Pretty keen on Deakin / ACU

How do you know you can't get into Monash/Melb?

Deakin offers a Diploma of Language, which you can use to study Italian. According to the requirements, you need to be enrolled in an undergraduate degree but also meet the requirements of a Bachelor of Arts degree (study score min. of 30 in ESL or 25 in English). I'd assume you'd do it at the same time as your Business degree, but the duration listed is only 3 years, so I'm not sure if it'll add another year.

I checked the ACU website but couldn't find much. You'd have to ask one of their course advisors.

EDIT: The commerce degree at Deakin offers 8 units which you can take outside the Faculty of Business/Law. You could use those to take up Italian, but there are also 8 compulsory level 1 units in the Commerce course, so that might clash (I'm not familiar with Deakin's trimester system, sorry).

I guess you could say it's just a feeling I have!

I've sent an enquiry to Deakin asking about whether of not the Diploma can be done along side of a business degree, so hopefully i hear back from them shortly.

And I've also emailed ACU.

Thanks btw for the post, it was helpful :D

Your age isn't listed, but did you do year 12 last year?

If Deakin's diploma is like Monash's, you would do it concurrently (at the same time as your undergraduate degree). What I'm not sure about is if it adds time to complete your degree (Monash make it pretty clear that their diploma adds one year).

I'm sorry I couldn't be more helpful, I've only really read up on Monash and Melbourne. -_- Hope you get a reply soon!

Nope, I'm a current Yr 12 student :) Just thinking ahead and trying to work out what I'd like to study and where.

If that's the case, I don't think you should rule out either. At the start of year 12 (with my school's recent performance and my own disappointing performance in the year 12 subject I did in year 11), I thought the best I could do was RMIT (~75). Even though that was a realistic expectation, I set my sights higher, for Monash (the numbers you see in my sig, which I'll need to change eventually). Come December, I was quite pleased, and barring a 4-5 point increase, I should get an offer from them.

If I can get a decent score, anybody can (though I guess most of it was due to good scaling). What subjects are you doing this year?

Also:
BCom Deakin: 80.25
BBus Monash: 82.50
Not that much of a stretch, though I guess we'll have more recent information whenever they release this year's guide.

I believe that is quite achievable for me.

I can't really help you further so I hope you get a reply soon (or if you already have, that they've answered your questions). Good luck for your studies in 2009! :)

Thank you for all your help.
This morning I received a reply and I'm happy to say that I can do ANY undergraduate course and do the diploma of languages alongside of it. :D

OKAY, so i have another question which I'm hoping some Uni Buff can help me with :)

http://courses.swinburne.edu.au/Courses/ViewCourse.aspx?mi=100&id=26044

Obviously the major is in HR Managment, but do "co-majors" actually count as a major? I'm learning now that @ swinburne I can study a variety of subjects, and still do italian. But im just wondering if it equivilant to a major, and if not, are they just like taking extra subjects?

sorry, extremely cluess about this, and i think VN users and more helpful than the actual uni staff :)

I think by 'co-majors' they mean double majors, which would mean that both subjects would count as majors.
