i tot most of the first year subjects r compulsory? like u study subjects in all the commerce disciplines?

nop. they are not all in first year. check out the unimelb website has some good info. http://www.bcom.unimelb.edu.au/bachelor/course_structure.html

there are certain exemptions for Actuarial Students though. They meet the quantitative requirements by doing the more difficult maths. Non-actuarial students can do the same if they want to, but its not common.

'Students usually choose their major at the beginning of the second year*.
*Students pursuing actuarial studies, accounting or the approved engineering subject sequence are required to choose specific subjects from the first year.'

lol i doubt ill hav decided wat major by the end of next year so ill prob do the specific subject needed for accounting major in first year n sum others...

n i think actuarial studies lead to actuary? >.< i think its like assessing risks n stuff... mainly working in insurance n take into account all the stuff to put the pricing? working lots wid numbers n get paid LOTS lol...

LOL @ melanie.dee! Thats a classic.
obituary? LOL

Yehh I see what you mean but Brendan's point is that if you have absolutely have no idea what you want to major in and then you decide 2nd year you want to do accounting and you haven't done the 1st year accounting optionals then you may be ineligible to major in it.

Lol yeh. Commerce = dream course :smitten:

Does anyone know if you don't get into Commerce but you get into Arts @ Melbourne... whether you can study Commerce subjects as breadth subjects in your first year and then transfer into Commerce and have the breadth subjects credited towards your Commerce degree?

on rethinking that, now with the breadth requirement, it would be advantageous to meet the quantitative requirement the way that Actuarial Students do, because you do math subjects from the science faculty rather than the commerce faculty. So that it counts towards breadth.

So your saying that you could study more commerce subjects and meet the requirement for a major in actuarial studies through your breadth studies?

lol nop

the BCom has some compulsory requirements:

316-102 Introductory Microeconomics
316-101 Introductory Macroeconomics
325-201 Organisational Behaviour
Quantitative Requirement
Breadth Requirement

You can satisfy the Quantitative requirement by doing subjects from the commerce faculty or by doing subjects from the science faculty. Though the math subjects from the science faculty are more difficult, its advantageous to do the math subjects from the science faculty because you hit two birds with the one stone (quantitative requirement and the breadth requirement)

Ahh I see so the one subject can concurrently satisfy the requirements of two areas, the Quantitative and Breadth requirement?
