Please help me and check my Unit selection :(

Heyy,

I have tentatively created a course planner for my degree and I need to make sure of three things.

1. It fulfills all the requirements of the degree itself
2. It allows me to study a third major; economics.
3. It gives me full professional recognition through CA. (WAS CPA BUT HAVE NOW EDITED TO CA)

I will give you all the information you need to check. I have already checked and TO ME it seems fine. I just need other people to check to make sure I havent missed anything.

Download my unit planner in the attachment to this post first.

Here is the information:
1. Go to http://www.monash.edu.au/pubs/2009handbooks/courses/1334.html . Look at Requirements Check to make sure I fulfill all the requirements through my unit choices.
If it passes all these requirements, now please check to see if it will allow me to form a major for both accounting and management. If yes then please continue.

2. Go to here. http://www.monash.edu.au/pubs/handbooks/courses/3806.html
Now, I'm not entirely sure but IM PRETTY SURE I only need to complete a total of 8 units to get another major in Economics as thats how many it says u need for the BBus. HOWEVER, for accounting and management I needed 10 unit majors for my double degree (however you only need 8 unit majors for these if you do the BBus by itself) Nonetheless, I will find this information out from the faculty. It shouldnt matter though if I do need 10 subjects because I have 2 open electives which I could easily just change to economic subjects to get the major. If this all works, please proceed.

3. This part is really important to me. http://www.monash.edu.au/pubs/handbooks/undergrad/bus-03.html
Look at the CAULFIELD one and make sure that I have all the subjects to get professional recognition through the Chartered Accountants Program (ICAA) NOTTTTT (CA). (or at least on my way there). LOOK FOR (CPA) IN THE DOCUMENT. THESE ARE THE ONES I BELIEVE ARE NEEDED.

SOME UNITS OVERLAP WITH EACHOTHER. E.G. MICROECONOMICS IS IN ECONOMICS MAJOR HOWEVER IS ALSO NEEDED FOR ACCOUNTING ACCRED!

Can you see anything wrong with it??? Obviously I will go over this with the faculty, just want to prepare. BTW, for anyone who is in Uni already, do they make sure that all your needs (such as mine above) are met when you plan your units??

Thanks

ANYONE WHO IS HELPFUL ENOUGH TO GO THRU THIS WITH ME WILL GET +10 KARMA FROM ME- YES IM ABUSING THE SYSTEM

EDIT: PLEASE NOTE: I HAVE NOW CHANGED IT SO I AM ACCREDITED IN CA NOT CPA.

Don't have time to go over it, sorry, but ...

They don't automatically make sure if that's what you mean - if you don't meet graduating reqs thats your problem etc. There are however counsellors in every faculty who you can go to for advice on whether the units you choose match your needs. You also have like 2 weeks to change your units without penalty, so don't stress out too much!

Hate to say this, but I wouldn't start planning which subjects I will do until I have seen what the lecture/tute timetable looks like. Looking through the handbook is imperative, and I would probably write down a list of preferences of what I'd like to do, but it'll be extremely messy if something was double-blocked [which happens...] or you have the semesters wrong. During uni you might want a day off and try to plan that, or not have any 8 o'clock mornings, these you have to play with. You will also have the option to overload and underload, as well as summer school. ETC ETC ALL THE CHOICE are not known yet, so I wouldn't start worrying already =]

HOWEVER, nothing wrong with reading and getting excited over the unit handbook :P

Awk thanks.

Some of the units are compulsary. Like the core ones. and 6 out of the 10 for accounting and management are compulsary and 6 out of the 8 for economics are compulsary (if i wanna majorin eco) and the ones with CPA next to them are compulsary in some respect if i want get accreditation. Some of the subjects dont neccesarily have to be there. I just filled them in. :)

Dude, jst go c a course adviser once u start uni.
They get paid 4 this stuffs...

Also, as Mao said... unit ECFxxx @ 8am or unit AFFxxx @ a paltry 3pm will influence ur decision more than u realise @ the moment, plus all the other factors @ work.

If I have a bit of time 2moz (aka. don't get called in2 work 4 another 10 hour shift) then I'll have a look ova it 4 u.
On 1st glance tho... it seems ok... u'll have 2 make sure u don't get caught out with prereq units tho.

I checked the pre-reqs and they all seem fine.

Fyrefly, one question:

If for example I want to form a third major in Economics and one of the subjects is macroeconomics (compulsory for economics major) and one of the 4 elective units for accounting is macroecnomics, does that mean they can count for both my accounting and economics major?

I've heard conflicting stories.

That's odd. Enwiabe told me a differnt story... :S

Then again, enwiabe's case was that it counted for one DEGREE and another DEGREE.

I'll have to check with them.

:(

Having trouble structuring my course.
Seems I have too many semester 1 only units which makes it hard to work out how to do this.

Passes tests 1, 2 and 3... so long as one unit can count towards two majors - like microeconomics... TBH I don't really know whether it can or can't. If it can't, then you'll still be able to do what you want to do, but you'll have to overload for two semesters to get the units you need for CA accreditation.

BTW, for anyone who is in Uni already, do they make sure that all your needs (such as mine above) are met when you plan your units??

Not exactly, that's why Mao and I advised against planning your course unit-for-unit before you even start.
Being inflexible can result in timetable clashitis and I-am-srsly-not-getting-out-of-bed-at-this-time-of-morning-for-a-one-hour-tute disease (think Parkinson's, but worse) ...horribly contagious things they are.

:(

Having trouble structuring my course.
Seems I have too many semester 1 only units which makes it hard to work out how to do this.

I don't know how far you got with this since you posted, but alas...
I have gone a little bit further for you and planned a semester-by-semester course plan, just to show you that it can be done.

Note that it does not in any way account for:
Personal preference (whether you want to get all your level 1 units out of the way, or you want to do some level two units in first year, or like a MKF, AFF, BTF and ECF or all ECF for a sem, etc)
Timetable clashes (because I have no way of knowing)
...etc ...yeah... it's kinda generic basically... lots of level 1 units, then level 2 units, then level 3 units.

Oh, AND it is based on the assumption that a unit with that "offered in Sem 1 2009 (Day)" thing will also be offered Sem 1 2010, 2011, 2012... u get the idea.

Also, in my working out a hypothetical timetable for you, I sorted out your units by their daytime semester availability.
Hopefully this will make it easier for you when you shuffle your units around according to your needs.

Woah.
All that thinking made me hungry.

If there's anything particularly nonsensical about what I just said, then I apologise: 4 hours sleep and a 5am start.
And when I say nonsensical, I mean anything apart from the fact that I just used a pretty big word that actually exists and is in its correct context.

Being tired makes me dumberer which makes me smarterer somehow XD

/Probably should have stopped after the hungry thing >.<

Hope I helped Costa :)

A few days ago I made my own planner too.  (see attached)
There are many similarities in our sample plans. (ignore the 'timetable' name of the doc. i coodnt think of the name.
I was also considering the fact that the semester availabilities may change and this could change my choices.
I don't neccesarily think that ALL these subjects will be what I choose, but the majority will.

All the accounting subjects will stay the same because I want to do CA.
For all my semesters I've tried to do at least threes differnt areas of subjects. Eg. maybe two accounting subjects, an economics subject and a management subject. I think itll justkeep me interested.

Thanks so much once again jess.

Hi Costa,

Any additional majors you complete will be made up of eight units, so if you are not planning on applying for credit for previous study, you will easily be able to complete a third major in Economics. Our course advisors will be able to help you select the right units on enrolment day.

You are permitted to have up to two units double-count (count towards multiple majors) in each major. This means that you can have two units from your Accounting major and one unit (ECF1100) from the common core count towards your Economics major. The remaining five Economics units will need to be chosen as your electives.

We certainly encourage students to make the most of their electives in ways like this, and as I mentioned above, our course advisors are able to help you to select the correct units for this on enrolment day.

Kind regards,
