If you look at the VTAC thing - the equivalent at Monash is 99.5 - that is the highest of all courses (except med)
The reason it is so hard to get into is because they only have a handful of places - between 10-15 and it is based on other criteria (ie you have to prove you have the aptitude to complete the course)
You are given a academic mentor and your course is tailored to you - it also has a research component
As for what it teaches - its Arts or Science - except you are required to complete the course to a very high level - get HD averages etc and so obviously need to be quite clever to be able to complete the work to that standard (so if you were applying for a Job and you had a Deans Scholar or PhB student vs a normal arts student - if they fitted the bill, the deans scholar or PhB would be more likely to be offered a job

fuck me

but wouldn't the HD's be more difficult to gain in PhB than in a normal arts subject?
what happens if you avg like D's or whatever, they kick you out?

You do 3 regular arts subjects with the rest of the arts cohort each semester, your other course is an individual reading course with an academic supervisor. So, it's as easy to get a HD average in PhB as it is in regular Arts, but that in itself isn't a particularly easy feat.

They don't really kick people out for not meeting the average. But you do have to have a good performance. They wouldn't keep you in with a credit average, for instance, unless it was only one subject that brought you down or something. They're fairly understanding.

They do kick you out for PhB :p I've had two of my friends get kicked out - one at the end of first year, as her average was low 70s or so, and one at the end of second year, as he was always borderline 80 and then got a 73 average last semester, and so they drew the line.

But yeah, PhB students usually do 3 "normal" science or arts subjects each semester (i.e. the same subjects that a BSc or BA student would take) and one Advanced Studies Course that's all researchy and stuffs.

The cutoffs are all weird at ANU this year. Everything that used to be 75 has gone up to 80 except Economics, which went up to 84. And Law up half a point? It's all very strange, as usually the cutoffs are fixed and don't change at all from year to year.

but having to keep such a high avg would impact on your life, wouldn't it?

ahem

...because there's one of these for high-schoolers, so we uni kids should have one too.

Bit hard seeing as it's holidays right now, but anyway...

Here's my usual Monday from last term:

12:00pm - wake up, having slept through my 10am class. Decide to sleep in a bit more, through my 12 o'clock class.
12:30 - get up, go to "lunch" (but really breakfast) at college. Have a massive bowl of coco pops, while still in my dressing gown. Everyone else is usually dressed, having been to class that morning.
1pm - have a shower, get dressed, all that.
1:30-1:50 - piss around on the computer for a bit, check my email and WebCT.
1:50 - head off to class
2-3pm - my Analysis 2 lecture. Just sit there and read the prescribed text while the lecturer talks. Don't take notes.
3-4pm (some days) - tutor an indigenous student in first year maths, physics, or linguistics. They organise to meet up with me when they need help...
4-5pm - head back to college. Catch up with friends. Probably piss around on the computer a bit more.
5-6pm - dinner at college. Probably something rubbish. College food = not great. Most likely just make myself a toasted sandwich.
6pm onwards - hang around with friends. Most likely play Mario Kart Wii in my neighbour's room. Possibly play cards. Drink cider. Watch TV shows on their computers.

Definitely not study.

1am - people start heading off to bed about now usually
1-4am - hang out with friends if they're still awake. If I have an assignment for a subject, this is when I'd normally work on it...
4am - head off to bed.

and that's about it. This semester I'll probably go to a few of the classes in the first two or three weeks though. After that... well, it's unlikely. I'm really not a fan of waking up before 12...

Well done, Odette ;) Now my results look crap in comparison :(

MATH2406    Math Methods 2 Honours    HD    87
MATH2322    Algebra 1 Honours    HD    88
MATH3228    Complex Analysis Honours    HD    89
MATH3325    Analysis 3 Honours    HD    95

Just missed out on a 90 average, sigh...
