Title: UMAT Results Discussion Thread
Post by: luken93 on September 04, 2011, 12:03:57 pm
So it's probably about 3 weeks away until results are available...

How's everyone feeling?

What have you decided to do if you do well?

What are your backup plans if you don't?

Starting to get nervous  :-[

How am I feeling? Nervous.

If I do well? Hopefully go to a Monash interview.

If I don't? Hope to get into Melbourne.

aww man, im terrified.

especially because i feel like i haven't done that well compared to what everyone else is saying haha.
and the fact that its on the internet, i think my parents will probably see first cuz its linked to their emails not mine, which is another shittty thing abotu it.

hopefully i can scrape a 93 or 94 for an interview, although itll probably be higher for monash this year,

This would have been my topic name:

The countdown begins until I find out I can't get into med!

EDIT: didn't answer the questions...

How's everyone feeling? A bit nervous, but I know I'm not going to go too well compared to most VN-ers. Guessing an 80th-85th percentile, which defs won't make the cut.

What have you decided to do if you do well? Unlikely, but Monash med

What are your backup plans if you don't? Not entirely sure. Maybe chem engineering or actuary.

It's kinda weird actually, some people were going around saying they're pretty sure they got full score on section 3...which is kinda unusual.

I wouldn't be too worried what people say, there were a lot of people last year who thought they killed it and were faaarrr from it.

Awks though, I foretold myself that it coud happen, so I made sure it was in my email address haha. Perhaps set up an auto move to another folder when it's received? :P

Hmmm, the thing is though, if you can supposedly see all of the patterns, is there really that much room for error? Modesty aside, I think I did quite well and definitely hoping so for a reasonable chance, but who knows...I wonder what the maximum raw score is for S3? Hopefully enough to balance out the other two sub-60 scores :P

Haha well I'd love to say that I did, but who knows. If, however, we are basing it upon finishing time and confidence, then yeah, I finished with 15 minutes to go and picked the sequence in each question? But I don't wanna get cocky, but hopefully my predictions hold true! I think for me personally though, I'm gonna need a decent score here, as my other two - especially S2 - are not gonna get me into Med...

Stupid ACER for not specifying the date :( They just want to increase our suspense...

I have absolutely no idea how I went, I'm assuming anything between 0-100th percentile.

i am literally crossing out the days on my calendar, cant wait till that date :D

How's everyone feeling? IM EXCITEDD YAHH!

What have you decided to do if you do well? medicine at monash or UNSW

What are your backup plans if you don't? commerce/law at monash

How's everyone feeling?     indifferent, mainly because i died at section 2, thought i did well for s1 and s3. and most of the people ive spoken to have said the same.
What have you decided to do if you do well?     med monash if i can pass the interview and acquire a decent atar. Willing to travel interstate

What are your backup plans if you don't?   many, comm/law, or perhaps a basic science degree and melb and pursue grad med

i have honestly, totally forgot completely about the UMAT

I wish I could forget about the UMAT :(. Comparatively, I think I failed it. Section 1, I found decent, yet much more difficult than some people are claiming (lost 10+ marks I think...) and section 2, my score will approach 0% :P.

For those who have done methods probability, I would be SHOCKED if my score was outside one standard deviation from the mean.

If I do well: Monash Med. (though very unlikely)

If I don't do well: Commerce or Science at Melb. (likely to change in the near future)

What have you decided to do if you do well? Really not sure if i want to do medicine or something like actuarial studies or science  :-\

What are your backup plans if you don't?  Commrce/Science

mm fair enough;

im hoping for a more balanced set of results, at least that what i generally get, but again, who knows, i could have failed it, or boned it, most likely the former.

Haha yeah, I really don't think I'll have the kinda scores needed for UQ, I'd say the 50-50-50 rule will be out of reach :P

Oh well, good to know we're all in this together, hopefully there are at least a few of us that do well!

for someone of your intelligence though im at least expecting 2 SD's from the mean ;)

Just thought I would pull out some flaws:

1. Being within one standard deviation of the mean doesn't mean less than 68 percentile =.=. You should know this :P
Essentially, I am saying I will be within 16-84th percentile. (If this comes up in the methods exam, you owe me so bad! :D)

2. 68 isn't an exact figure, whereas my statement was. xD

hahah my bad, you do have a point, let me rephrase that
"you could have just said that you think you'll get in the middle 68 percent of all students
=.= are you happy now? :P LOL!

and yes, if that comes up on the exam, i will be very indebted to you :P

i will be as indebted to you as you would have been to me had i gone up to you on the day before the methods exam last year and told you to review similar triangles :P
LOL!

But yeah, I don't think I aced any of the sections - probably completely failed section 2... it was a damn english test! Hoping 95, will probably end up with 70-80... :( Oh well, there's no way of really predicting how we went - some people who think they failed may end up with 100s...

And Luke, clearly my communication skills are great with the children... ;)

and in the long run there's always graduate entry

yeah, but at our school 40% of our students get ATAR's above 90, about 7% (last year) got above 99.00

95-96 I think. UWA went bust last year - they dont offer undergrad med anymore - and Monash is offering fewer interviews.

But this is not all bad - because they have a UMAT (this round of interview) stream and an ATAR/UMAT stream now

well i guess a higher cutoff doesnt have to be a bad thing, for those that do well, a higher cutoff is good because its eliminated more competition instantly

What exactly is ATAR/UMAT stream?
Allows for ATAR to compensate for UMAT?
Im still sticking with 93, i think 95 is too high (yea its 2%ile) and i dont think 1 uni shutdown will increase monash interstate offers to the extent where they have to lower interview offers by 2%
(fingers crossed anways lol :D, unless i get 95+ that is)

There is a stream of interviews that are given out after ATARs come out. Albeit the ATAR and UMAT needed would be really high, but still it's better than nothing I spose...

I'd assume it would be because median ATAR overall is 99.1... but I wonder what kind of UMAT score you would need to get one of these interviews with a 99.5+ ATAR... :-\

Nah but if they have the same number of overall places I'd think it would be at least 85th or 90th...

if you get a 99.95, you can get in with a ridiculous umat of like 68th percentile (i know someone who did) - or maybe lower, but im not sure
Title: Re: The countdown begins!
Post by: thushan on September 09, 2011, 07:40:48 am
I'm thinking:

UMAT stream => overall 186 (62) = 95th percentile (top 6%) given the UWA thing AND that Monash is offering 400 instead of 500-600 interviews this time.

ATAR stream => 99.95, UMAT you need at least a 150 (50) ~ 50th percentile

ATAR/UMAT stream => i'm thinking a UMAT of 171 (57) for an ATAR of 99.7+ and a UMAT of 183 (61) for an ATAR of 99.1+...but that's an approximation - coz Monash combines the ATAR and UMAT using a formula and then takes the top 100 people who didn't already get an interview, so the higher ur ATAR, the lower the UMAT you need to get an interview and vice versa

you never find out the cutoff, youre either offered an interview or you're not
so you only really find out if you made the cut off or not, but not what the actual value is
and with regards to SEAS, i think its decided on a case by case basis and depends on how under-represented the school is
and nacho, i know the school you go to...its not THAT under-represented compared to a lot of other schools

lol, i know the school you actually go to, yash told me, but woah 440th, you serious, out of how many schools in victoria though :P

and nah, to answer your question though i dont think SEAS is taken seriously unless its genuine, like so youre saying that EVERYONE in your school is eligible for SEAS cause theyre all from a "bad" school? :P
and like i have friends that are doing SEAS based on nonenglish speaking backgrounds (even though they were born here) and like illnesses which arent even relevant

so i think SEAS is a tad dodgy :P

roughly estimating from the graph above, it seems you need about 85-90 % in all three sections to get around the monash cutoff

of course you can smash one section and bomb another. etc.

i don't think ill get those 85-90% in section 2 or 1,  I might scrape it for section3. Sept 21'st is not looking great

Hmmm, well it's not certain. Supposedly, I think it's meant to be raw score, but the whole weighting process isn't publicly known, so who knows...

Don't lose faith! Just remember, look at how much higher the score is from the 80th-90th percentile, and then how many it is from the 90th to 100t percentile. Absolutely ace one section, and it definitely helps out a lot!

I just mean that for each section, they would weight questions in order to get these lovely graphs and you would get a final score. Since we don't know how weighting works, you can't really estimate a score...

Just checked website - there's not a cutoff as such, because they take 90% ATAR and 10% UMAT for final rankings, so your UMAT could be anything half-decent really depending on your ATAR.

i know 2 people who got into latrobe dentistry without biology, but last year it WASNT a prerequisite
i looked at last year's VTAC guide
this year it is :P

but i called them up and they say that if you get a high ATAR, they will consider it
then and again, im not going to bendigo =.= :P
so if anyone here actually wants to go, you can call them up and check with them abt it

LOL...don't blame u can't wait to get out of here myself ;D

One of my mates got into dentistry at La trobe last year with a terrible umat and an atar of 86....they r pretty desperate for students to study there...although ur not technically studying there, most of the course is done using monash resources!

what's actually so bad about bendigo? :P

and oh right, but is there options for studying off campus or only being there once or twice a week? :D
i might consider if there is ;)

well bendigo is a great place in terms of living, however, in terms of tertiary education (i.e. la trobe) it is a pretty big hole

I thought it was the opposite....do you really know where Bendigo is?
Btw, the UMAT is irrelevant for your friend and getting an ATAR of 86 and getting in meant that your friend must have had like the maximum SEAS possible because dentistry is a competitive course and the normal cut off was 99.10 in 2010 and higher in previous years

That's what I though that SEAS got him into dentistry however all he had was category 1 (rural scheme)....I know I was like WTF  :o

Mate I don't blame you for not taking my info seriously...his friends and even the teachers were in utter shock that he got in...I guess he was lucky...BUT HOW???

BTW I'm not a troll dude  ;D

Is there an interview for dentistry at La Trobe? If so, that might explain why he got in. However, even if he did destroy the interview he must have been very very very LUCKY!!

Haha I know someone who claimed indigenous SEAS because they had a random, distant relative who was Aboriginal. And I mean a VERY distant relative....

Hey guys, just a quick heads up - this is straight from the ACER website, it's officially a week until scores were released this time last year, get excited!

Quote from: ACER
Scores

An online UMAT Statement of Results was made available to all candidates on Wednesday 22 September 2010.

The Statement of Results contains a score for each section of the test, and an overall score.  It also provides information on percentile ranks.

Under no circumstances will results be released over the phone, by fax or by email. This is to protect candidate confidentiality.

You will receive a score for each section of the test, and an overall score.  You also will be provided with information on your overall percentile rank.  Candidates will not be provided with any additional information on the scoring process. All such information remains the property of ACER and the UMAT Consortium. A candidate has no right to examination of ACER’s scoring processes and methodologies.

The universities will set their own UMAT cut-off scores each year. These will be the minimum UMAT scores acceptable for consideration by the admissions committees and may vary from one university to another. The universities may also choose to use the scores in other ways.

He said that to me too (and I'm a friend!), but after further questioning and seeing peoples actual percentile scores online at school, I found that there were only a couple like this (ie. GROSS exaggeration). And these people were only consistent on S1 and S3 (one of whom always got 0-20 on S2). I didn't see anyone with consistent 80+ on S2.

it's like i put a lot of effort and hard work into the umat, and like just getting something back seems like i'm actually getting something in return for the effort i put in, even if i might not be 100% happy with my mark!

im sure SOMEONE has to know what i mean! :D
absolutely the opposite for me in spech.. i dont put much effort and BOOM.. this happens :S
so yeah dont worry about me beating you cause im overachieving :P

does anyone know if applying to James Cook requires Qtac application?
Title: Re: The countdown begins!

weirdest thing happened today.
we were analysing the 2010 exam language analysis piece on biodiversity, which contended that 'not enough as been done in the past 10 years... but its not too late'
then my tutor, to the whole class, showed how you could compare it to a parent teacher interview
and she said
'you've bludged the whole year, despite making commitments and aiming for high goals . you screwed up mid years chemistry, you go to tutors and do jack all, UMAT results are out... but its not too late, if you buckle down and work hard, you can still make something of it..'

this is like a perfect description of me.. and she didnt know that i did chem or the umat either. is this some sort of premonition? :/

If anyone is super bored, perhaps trawl through some old threads and find when the 2009 results were released?

Haha I was just doing this...

2007: 20th
2008: 23rd
2009: 23rd
2010: 22nd
2011: ?

Weird results came on the 20th in 2007... so we could get them as early as Tuesday!

Also, don't read through last year's results thread. I am now very, very scared... :-\

Considering there's been a 20, 22 and 23...they're missing a 21, so they might release it on a 21 this year ;) hehehh (:
which makes it conveniently Wednesday :D

It was amusing to read StoneCold mispredict all his study scores though.

he wanted "as good as score" as fady's for bio and ended up with 4 SS's higher =P

his englang ended up at 49 and his "english" which "stressed him out" and was meant to "ruin his ATAR" turned out to be 46.

what a gun. fkn amazing kid.

Haha - Yeah, and he is such a genius that ACER actually called him up to make the UMAT for them this year. So, to anyone who thinks they failed, we know who to find..... He is the reason for our mental instability, resulting from the UMAT.
"Lets get him fellas!"

P.S. I'm joking of course =.=

maybe we should stop pressuring thushan by saying that he will beast it and such.
i think we saw from last year's thread that the umat can be quite unpredictable (stonecold and vexx)
although, i too feel thushan will beast it, as i  have seen the scores he was getting as he posted them on the medentry forums,
it seems like we all have such high expectations he has to live up to. know what im saying?
im not trying to say he'll do bad, but yea, lets just wait for results :)

edit: unless you dont mind this glitz and glamour thushan, in that case, predict away!

Should I make a results thread, or do you want to post them here?

Make a thread just for results and I'll sticky it as a record. Do all the discussion, congratulations, plan Bs etc. in here

@nacho: i know what you mean but i don't think he minds the attention ;P nahh lol just kidding i did consider that before typing but i guess its also a reminder for him that he should defo not slip now, since he's done so well before if you get what i mean.  And like he said, he may have been losing motivation, which is expected as we all do...However nacho you raise a very valid point and @thushan if you do mind in any way just bring it up promptly and it will never be mentioned. It was actually the first time i noticed your marks that is on every post. I always thought you were smart cuz of ur great mid year marks. but seeing that i was like =O wow!!

hi,
i've only recently found this forum and i hav to say the amount of support going around is awesome. everyone here seems to be like so and so is going to smash it and then so and so is like, nooo, u're going to smash it. lol, in the lead up to results my new hobby is pretty much lurking on all umat related forums and reading posts from people who feel the same way i do. its makes the experience seem less daunting i think?

anyway, back to the support, i'd also like to wish everyone good luck...i've got both finges crossed for us.

Yep, that's the aim mate! It's a very unique experience that we're all sharing, and I think because so few people actually understand the enormity of it, it's really good to get some support by both past and present UMATters. Hopefully, it'll make everyone's UMAT experience that little bit less daunting!

Good luck

You have a very odd memory Paul..... Neither of those two moments ever happened LOL. While we were discussing section 1 papers, I was never "so happy about it."
And yes, we did talk right after the UMAT. However, I certainly wasn't happy with section 1; it was quite the opposite. I have two words for that day (not just the UMAT) - Epic Fail.

Firstly, try not to give up on VCE, even though continuing on will seem pointless.

You have some options.  None of them are particularly flattering but you have to consider them.

-Get a 99.90+ ATAR and then either Monash or Melbourne are likely to take you
-Depending on your UMAT mark, ATAR and medical school preferences, your score may still be good enough for entry into less recognized unis.  This of course depends on whether you are willing to move interstate.
-Get a 99+ ATAR and go to unimelb where you will have a guaranteed FFP (200k) post grad med spot.  This is subject to passing an interview and maintaining a 75+ average in either biomed or science.
-Again, if you are looking to go interstate, JCU and Griffith do not use UMAT
-Take a gap year and resit the UMAT to try again for Monash
-Start Science/biomed, then resit UMAT and you can try and transfer into med at certain unis.  Monash does not however allow this.
-Otherwise, you have to take either science or biomed, get a good GPA, a good GAMSAT mark, do well on an interview and be considered for post grad med at Melb/Deakin Geelong/Monash Gippsland or some other uni interstate.

Sorry if it seems confronting, but those are your options.

I honestly think that this year's UMAT was much harder to score well in (percentile-wise) than previous years. From my knowledge, in most years, the cutoff for Monash med is 93%, which equated to a rough score of 60, but this year, so many people who received an overall >60 have fallen short of the 93rd percentile. I know someone the year before who got 95% with a score of 61-52-63, but apparently that score can only get you a 89-91% this year D:

Well, it sucks to be in one of the most outstanding year levels ever, guys!! Cheer up, and let's rejoice in the fact that our year level is going to kick VCE ass this year :D

To everyone moping about getting a 92nd percentile or thereabouts (in regards to not getting into Monash MBBS), remember that it's the sum of your section scores, NOT your overall score or your percentile that counts for that course. Some of you are likely to still have a fair chance.

Overall score is just the average of your section scores, with the percentiles then being based off this. Ultimately, point is, they're all derived off each other anyway so I don't really see your point. And I think the reason why they're somewhat scared is because the cut-off several years ago was actually 93 percentile. Not too sure what the trend has been like the last two years though.

Yeah and it doesn't really matter if 63 is higher than last year's cutoff - because the percentile this year is lower which means more people got higher (and will get the interviews)... I'm just hoping for an ATAR/UMAT interview if I manage a high enough ATAR....

Although I am glad they're using overall scores haha because mine was rounded down... :P

Underestimated by probably 15% I reckon, was hoping to do well but not THAT well, especially S2 and sort of S1!

100th percentile
83,70,74 - 76 overall

I must say, beating you in section 3 would probably be the highlight of my year.

Does anyone know what the top score on the UMAT was? I've heard of an 83 raw (100th percentile), but I'm really curious...

Does anyone know the minimum % to get in...is it like 95+ or.. 97+ :(
EDIT: for interviews

Not sure, last year it was 93rd percentile. For UMAT stream apparently (according to Monash Admissions) the cutoff for UMAT total is in the vicinity of 200 this year (so I'd say about 190 to 200).

Does anyone know how many interviews Monash are doing for the UMAT stream? I'm really really hoping a total of 196 will make the cut ):

does anyone know if they offer interviews just straioght to the top 400 or whether they take into account your preferences, i.e if you have registered with VTAC and put it as no.1

They definitely take VTAC preferences into account. They're not about to go giving interviews to random people in New Zealand because they got  a good umat score.

*Shattered* I was so happy because I thought I'd be in for a December interview ):
by the way, are equal amounts of 100th percentile and 90th percentile awarded? Or do they use a bell curve?

And yet another question to further JDogs stats, are we of any benefit actually getting an early interview and being in the UMAT stream? Or are we ranked against those from the atar UMAT stream - and hence, are there X number of positions available for each stream?

I asked about this too, they said they decide after every interview has been conducted, and rank them overall, so there are no allocated spots. That makes sense becuase a person with 95 % shouldn't ahve a better chance than a person with 94% if we assume 95% is the cutoff.

I have to nail enter and umat,

Id be fairly confident if i was you, i think the cutoff will be 94 or 95 this year, it would be ludicrous to have it any higher

Did you ask them about any predictions regarding the cutoffs for ATAR/UMAT interviews? If the cutoff is say ~195 (for pure UMAT interviews) do you reckon 190 and 99.5ish would have a chance?

We said this about graduate entry and were wrong. Not to scare anyone or say you won't get in, but my point is that you should just do your best and let other people worry about the cutoffs you can't control

yeah the estimate this bloke gave was indeed rough, but he is a MBBS student, who is well respected. he is the head lecturer of that connect ed program,.

and i asked a mate at school who has a friend on the admissions board and he quoted "high 99's" s

its always good to strive high, getting a 99.8 will hold you in better stead than a 99.5

I agree, but what I think I will do is just work as hard as I can and see what happens. I won't specifically say I am aiming for a 99.7 so that i will get an interview, but rather just bust my gut to get the highest i can. if thats not good enough so be it; but not going to get to the end of the year saying if i had spent more time shit coulda been differnet.

I don't think JDog meant 99.8+ as an ATAR floor. That's with a UMAT percentile of 92; suppose your UMAT percentile is 95 and 96 was the cut (hypothetically) you might only need a 99 - again they simply take people who don't already have an interview, get their ATARs and UMATs, mash them together to get a combined total, then take the top ~200.

Having said that 99.8+ with a 92nd percentile UMAT I think is a tad high - I'd think closer to 99.6 (remember this is for interviews, NOT admission).

This information may help; of the CSP metro students in first year med this year (excluding bonded):

ATAR (median) = 99.30
UMAT (median) = 62 (I think this was 95th percentile last year)
Interview (median) = 86 (presumably out of 100)

Hey guys, just thought I'd let you know;

Rang admissions today, apparently interviews are the first two weeks in December, we will receive an email late October with a link to choose a designated day/time in which to attend.

Also found on the course details that apparently the dates are 7th - 15th December for Clayton, sooo I presume this would be the actual dates...

I'm on schoolies until the 9th...don't take my few days I have to do it people :P . The erm "nice" lady told me if I'm considering staying at schoolies in preference of a Med interview, perhaps I'm not the best applicant hahaha. Didn't give me the chance to say I was trying to book an early flight home if so :P

Congratulations everyone on achieving such a remarkable score. I wish you all the best for your interviews in december!  :)
I am in Year 11 and I am sitting the UMAT next year.
Did you use medentry to prepare for the UMAT? and if so how often did you use it? and to what degree did you find it helpful?
should I start preparing now or is it alright if I start in December?
