Denying a goal-scoring opportunity, which Kewell clearly did, is an automatic red card.

Which is only fair when you think about it.

(p.35)
Quote from: http://www.fifa.com/mm/document/affederation/generic/81/42/36/lawsofthegame_2010_11_e.pdf
Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct
Sending-off offences
A player, substitute or substituted player is sent off if he commits any of the
following seven offences:
serious foul play
• violent conduct
• spitting at an opponent or any other person
• denying the opposing team a goal or an obvious goalscoring opportunity by deliberately handling the ball (this does not apply to a goalkeeper within his own penalty area)
• denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity to an opponent moving towards the player’s goal by an offence punishable by a free kick or a penalty kick
• using offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or gestures
• receiving a second caution in the same match

Bullshit that was deliberate. Referee was a moron.

It's not really the ref's fault. Apparently the FIFA rules are that if you obstruct a goal from going in, it's a penalty and a red card despite intention. Basically the penalty is obviously deserved, but apparently a red card has to follow with that penalty if it occurs within the penalty box for some reason. It's more of a flaw in the game than anything. The whole game's fouling system seems to be based off the consequence of an action, not the action itself which is really stupid. If I was a coach, I'd just tell all my players to start kicking balls at people's arms within the penalty box from now on.

Or you could try telling them to start kicking balls at the goal in the penalty box...

Kicking at the arm means you get a penalty which is most likely a goal, PLUS one of their players get sent off. Would be hilarious to watch a 11v5 game or something.

lol yeh, I'm not really being serious. More just pointing out the flaw in the game >_> They really need to start judging fouls cards by intention rather than consequence. There's no point punishing people over something they have no control over. The point of a punishment is to change future behaviour. You can't change unintentional behaviour...

NO WAY!!! (to video ref)
Then all the great moments like Hand of God and Thierry Henry's epic handball would disappear from the game

It'd help, but it won't solve everything. Current soccer rules seem a bit subjective, and refs will never overturn their decisions on something which they can mildly justify even after video footage.

LOL, and we sure wouldn't want that happening D:

It is also an Automatic Red card for a tackle from behind. Gee it should been a 10 vs 10 match....
