Do you know how good dentistry is. The hours are great. The money is excellent.
None of those factors matter. The real question is, whether you're passionate about dentistry or not. Don't let the money, family expectations and the status become your major source of influence. Picture yourself in a clinic everyday, cleaning patient's teeth, checking for cavities and enduring bad breath. Could you do this for the rest of your life without a passion? Some people can handle it. Some people can't. And for the individuals who can't, they are likely to be more prone to depression and suicide than others. The majority of our population hate their jobs, right? But for dentists, it's a different case - it is not your average job. Dentist is regarded as highly stressful job because responsibility is higher than average. You're dealing with patients, not computers and machines and dentists experience numerous workplace, financial, practice management and societal issues for which they often are unprepared for. You have to also adopt a calm and positive attitude while working under stressful conditions. And these are the reasons why dentists have such a large suicide rate in contrast to other occupations. What I'm trying to say is you shouldn't do dentistry because you couldn't gain entry into medicine. They are two completely different fields. Or you shouldn't do dentistry to make use of your ENTER score. Just do what you feel passionate about. Confucius once said, 'Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life'
