If I were you, I'd go the HTC Desire or Samsung Galaxy S.
My brother just got the desire, and I got his hand-me-down iphone 3gs. Desire is so much more awesome by a LOOOOONG shot (or maybe it's the IT nerd in me LOVING the customisability and widgets, etc.)
But anyway, if you get an iphone go for a 3gs over an iphone 4 - way cheaper and almost the same in terms of functionality. Also, google "antennagate".

I agree that those are impressive devices, but unless you are a 'geek' then they still lose to an iPhone IMO.  Android will never beat iOS until they can come out with a dumbed down version that is simple to use.  I doubt Google will do this because they are all into freedom and customization.

And those phones have bigger screens, which initially seems like a plus, but they drain battery big time.  Apparently you can struggle to get a day out of them.

Apple kinda screwed up on the whole signal loss thing on the iPhone 4, but the next one will be a killer.

If I were buying one of these phone for one of my parents, it would definitely be the blackberry, to avoid all the questions I would be bombarded with regarding how to unlock the phone, how to use apps, how to turn on the phone, etc. if either of my parents had an iPhone/android phone.
If I were buying a phone for one of my not-particularly-technologically-inclined friends, it would have to be the iPhone, for it's sheer ease, fun and utility.
If I were buying a phone for me, my brother, or one of my more tech-geeky friends, HTC Desire all the way.

But hey, I would take any of these in a flash, on account of the fact that I'm stuck with a 5-year-old Sony Ericsson brick, because my good phone got run over by a car

It really depends on what you look for in a phone. I've always been a massive tech nerd (more nerd than geek, I would say...)

HTC doesn't give you that, the iPhone is so easily distinguishable and has way more apps than HTC, etc. iPhone 4 all the way

Exactly. Coolness is definitely better than user-friendliness or cost or better specs.

That's why I go iPhone4 all the way! Of course, me being a fanboy and have no idea what other phones have, refuse to admit otherwise.

How does iPhone = automatic coolness? It's just getting the phone that everyone, everywhere tells you is the best, without even doing some independent research and finding out what other phones are on the market. Apple's got a monopoly on the handset market, hence they can charge exorbitant prices for their products and no-one bats an eyelid. Why spend so much on an iPhone, when you can get a smartphone loaded with android/wp7 that is as good as, if not better than, an iPhone? Android has almost as many apps available as iOS, and you can get one for as little as $200-300 outright, as opposed to $800-1000. Granted, the low-end one's aren't great, but even the HTC phones around the $500 mark could rival the iPhone.
Independent thinking is the heart of innovation and cultural progression. Don't be fankids.

I remember that video, it's still epic. Just too bad the evo isn't usable in Aus (Although the DesireHD is pretty much the same thing, without 4g)
