My breadth lecturer basically forgot to turn it on, so I've missed the only lecture for that subject this week and it was 2 or 3 hours long whoops

There's a generally unoccupied kettle in the women's room at union house too!

What are you considering, hobbitle? I remember civil engineering was on the cards.

Was vaguely considering either Biochem & Molecular Biology or Cell & Developmental Biology actually.  But 95% I will be sticking with Bioeng, because I've slogged through all the maths prereqs.  But I'm going to do a 'minor' probably in BCMB.  So maybe if I change my mind and want to do Honours instead of Masters, I'll hopefully be allowed to. To be honest I probably am just having a momentary freakout due to starting first Bioeng core subject.

Wow, Prac Chem is looking like it's going to be a pain. I picked up the lab manual today.

It feels like the make it or break it of being a chemist, the subject may as well be called "can you do breaking bad?"

They run spectra on your products and check it for impurities, theoretical yield vs actual yield, everything. And the subject is 90% based on your prac performance and writeups.

I'd have a chat to the department/the Honours coordinator - there's probably courses that they'd definitely like a prospective Honours student to have (ideally, the three third year major subjects, BCMB30001, BCMB30002 and BCMB30010.)

I'd like to say 'it's not really that bad,' but yeah, it's really that bad. You have to run the spectra - you'll be very familiar with the KBr disk press by the end of the subject. As long as you keep up with the write-ups, you'll be fine (most of the marks are there - 8/10 marks usually.)

I'm kind of in a similar situation. Atm I'm probably going to major in physiology or pharmacology<-- research after honours but I was wondering if it would be possible to do immunology or if it's not possible because I didn't complete MIIM20001 or major in immunology?

Hahaha bioeng + biochem are my two majors!! Though I'm much more likely to be doing honours than m.eng
the stuff from the intro bioeng lecture all looked so cool though! Andrea oconnor has been my hero since the start of last year ; u ;

Haha you are way more organised about it than I am! I just realised how well they go together and how I think I might actually love molecular biol more than BioEng (I feel disheartened by my maths skillz or lack thereof).  But BMEN30007 is cool! And Andrea is cool!  Though it might be pretty hard :(  I'm investigating the Honours route though its likely I'll only be able to manage 2 or 3 of the BCMB Level 3 subjects.

May be worth discussing with the peeps who run the departments/Honours, as the poster previously said.  Choosing a major is hard! But gets easier as time goes on and your options narrow due to prereqs haha.  Like basically I'm stuck with Bioengineering Systems for the B-SCI (which is fine!) - I literally can't complete any other major without taking an extra 6 months.  But I'd like to keep some other Honours options open if possible.

If it helps you fit more subjects in, I know you can take bcmb30010 without the bcmb20005 prerequisite. (I wish I knew this earlier, I wouldn't have taken tms! QQ) And you can cover the lecture content for bcmb20005 in a day. If you take bcmb20002 now, you should be able to complete the biochem major without extending too much. The biomed research project is available over summer as well.

REALLY. This may be very helpful, thank you.  So you can get a waiver?

Unfortunately I can't - still only taking Chem 2 this semester. Behind with Chem subjects :(

I doubt this would be normal for unimelb students, unless there's some extremely unusual circumstance. I know exceptions are made for exchange students. That said, I do think you could get away with not doing BCMB20005, as long as you're aware that BCMB30010 would be a huge step up from first year chem. Still, I'd contact the coordinator, although you'd need a pretty good reason.

The research project is available over summer, but you need to have completed BCMB30010 first.

Where are you actually? I call an AN meet @ simpaks tea room

How do you /still/ not know where Doherty is.  Cnr Grattan and Elizabeth Sts, across the rd from Med.

hobbitle, you can definitely do Hons without being in the exact department in third year.  Seriously, someone asked ME to do Biochem Hons and the best I did for Biochem was BCMB20002.  Not stringent at all.  And plus - you don't even have to have gone to UoM for Ugrad to do Hons at Melb Uni.

I have a problem with lecture capture/echo recordings. Whenever I click on a link on the LMS for echo centre it loads a blank screen, I am also unable to scroll. Tried installing/uninstalling flash, and refreshing the page doesn't help either. Does anyone know of this problem? Or have any ideas as to why this might occur?
