What do you mean by self organise a winter study abroad in 3rd year? Is that the exchange where you just fork out the fees for everything yourself and not worry about being selected?
essentially, but you still get an OS-HELP loan so that you basically get a CSP spot for the subjects you do. you still have to pay for living costs etc. but thats the same as on exchange. Most of the big universities have it, you go to their website and look for their summer school program (northern hemisphere summer is our winter) and alot of them offer 6 week classes which is their equivalent to melbourne unis summer semester except theres is open to students from any uni.
for example i went to a school in america, you just pick a school, pay the fees and deposit and youre in. you dont have to pay for tuition fees/living costs for a while until all your stuff is sorted out with uni. you have to go on your own to melbourne uni and give faculty advisors for different fields a copy of your subjects syllabus where you are studying and they will approve it as credit as a 1/2/3rd level subject in their faculty. then once ur subjects are approved and you pay ur fees living expenses u just go. i was gonna go to the harvard summer school (anyone can go u just pay) but it was way wayy to expensive and not worth it + boston isnt as fun as florida or california. so i picked a cheaper option at a still very good school and had a blast. the OS-HELP loan covered all the tuition fees but living costs are obviously separate. i knocked out 2 subjects worth of credit in 6 weeks and it was the easiest shit of my life. I was kinda scared cos online reviews said the subjects I was picking were meant to be pretty hard and people do them in summer cos they failed during the semester and alot of my classmates struggled but it was quite honestly really easy. after going to uni in singapore america and australia i can firmly say the university of melbourne is way way harder than these other countries. summer school at melbourne uni makes these other schools look like year 9 english.
anyway rant over - but yeah, if you don't get into an exchange google "XXXX university summer school" for most big american unis they have one. just the fees rack up and some of them are expensive as shit but its pretty cool if you can find an affordable one. Also melbourne uni gives $5000 interest free to students for this if you need it and you dont have to pay them back until you get a full time job after graduating. its probably not quite as fun as exchange as you get way less time there but its still pretty cool. I would still prefer exchange though just because it would be a less intensive workload and spending 6 months somewhere would be more fun than 2 months. One recommendation i do have is melbourne uni commerce has a subject "international business experience" which is a second year commerce subject, and you basically spend july studying abroad with other people doing the one of these study abroad programs, except melbourne uni pay for the fees and a few unimelb students go. The best part is you don't get assessed overseas, it all happens when you get back. so people were worrying about exams and studying crazy hard because they cram the equivalent of 3rd year investments into 4 weeks, but because you go under a melbourne uni subject all the assessment happens when you get back (you just write a journal about your experience and give an oral presentation about what you learnt). and the universities that unimelb send people to have the best social programs etc. especially the one in singapore at SMU. its super popular year after year and it is fkn LIT. highly recommend
ok now the rant is over for real i got an exam tomorrow.
peace out
