, I was wondering what are options for accommodation at/near the University of Melbourne. I for one am personally hoping to get to say near the uni in a shared house/room/apartment, of both boys and girls. Mainly, just looking to make new friends and further expand social connections. Therefore, I was wondering if any fellow ATAR Notes users know of good locations to stay at.
If so, I'd appreciate if you'd describe the type of accommodation, how easy is it to meet new people, and if staying with several others is a good option, and whether you reckon it's worth it. Also, are there places like UniLodge, which is a community in itself? That seems really good.
Woah dude. You aren't at uni till 2016. Bigger things to worry about between now and then.
But to answer your question:
Option 1- If your parents have the dollars to send you to an on-campus college, that's definitely your most 'social' option and it's good for school-leavers as it doesn't throw them straight into the realities of being away from home (you dont have to feed yourself etc).
Option 2 - and this option also requires $$$ - you can get a room at UniLodge which I don't know much about but I think they are pretty small and single-person so perhaps not so social? I don't think UniLodge provides you with food so I could be wrong.
Option 3 is moving into a house with friends, or just move in with randoms who are looking for a housemate.
If you are moving out with friends, look on domain.com.au or realestate.com.au for houses (search to rent 2,3,4 bedroom whatever). You have to fill out lots of applications and go to lots of inspections etc etc. I personally wouldn't recommend this option as a school leaver.
If you want to move into a share house with 'randoms' then use gumtree.com.au and look through their 'room for rent' section. There are about 30 new ads a day for a room just in the inner north area. A room in a 3 bedroom house in Carlton can cost you anywhere between $160-$300 a week depending on how nice the place is.
