Hey guys, I just had a suggestion for one of you university veterans to take up. Timetabling has shown to be a rather difficult process for a lot of jaffies and while the university itself does help with a video tutorial on how to register for classes, there's obviously a lot of extra tips and tricks that they simply don't cover. Many of these are probably well-known by you students and some of these have been coming out in dribs and drabs over many threads on the forums (thank you to all those who have done this in some way over the past few days). However, I think many of us would really appreciate it if perhaps someone collated a 'Tips and tricks to UoM timetabling' thread just to help us all out. Thanks. :)
Great idea. I don't have the time over the next few days personally, but if someone does put them together I'll do the rest.

That being said it's one of those things you can only learn so much without actually doing. Most if it is just a mad rush on Monday morning.

Actually I think it's a very straightforward process.

The only two tips/advice you should need that might not be entirely obvious:
1. Don't give yourself hour breaks to get to and from classes. Despite what you see on the timetable, classes are scheduled to start 5 minutes late and finish 5 minutes early
2. Don't expect the system to work at 10am tomorrow morning. There's a shitload of people trying to do the same thing as you and the servers can't keep up. Expect it and don't get frustrated.

Feel free to shoot me a PM pertaining to getting to M.Eng through the Environments course, or the Envs/Eng courses in general.

in subjects with scheduled cal sessions, can you complete the cals outside of the classroom in your own time? im thinking about taking fundamentals of cell biology where cals are an important learning tool for the exam, and i'd hate to only have 1 go lest i need to revise something come swotvac..
Those CALs you can do in your own time, they just book out a computer room in case anyone needs internet access or help with the questions. (Hint: I always did them at home a few days before the CAL test - makes it easier to remember everything). There's a handout a few pages long with questions that you need to answer using the CAL. Of course, they could change it this year, but that is how it was in 2013.

Sure, that's some stuff which I think needs to be covered, but for example Shenz0r posted in another thread a link that allows us to access the timetabling page without having to enter through the portal. Things like this would be a massive help. :)

Hi,

When you say that "classes are scheduled to start 5 minutes late and finish 5 minutes early", are you only refering to lectures, or do they also include tutorials. So tutes also finished 5mins early and start 5 mins late?

Cheers

Sometimes I feel like timetabling and enrollment is just UniMelb's way of sorting the megageniuses from well, the rest of us.

More simply I think it's just a test of patience and sanity.

I'm thinking it's this^

On another note, I'm currently considering not going to university because I submitted a form to Centrelink 2 weeks ago and they've just sent me the exact same form again. Still in the application process for something I began almost 2 months ago T_T

CENTRELINK RUINED MY TFN APPLICATION TWICE AND MADE ME VISIT THEIR OFFICES FOR DETAILS ALREADY PROVIDED THREE TIMES
They're terribly inconsistent/bad at housekeeping in my personal experience ;/ What were the forms you submitted for? Depending on what they are you may be able to process them through another organisation or obtain a certificate for the uni to verify that the applications have been made.

Centrelink took 2 hours to sign a document for me once :(
I have to go there next month to get my YA updated and I'm already having nightmares.

On the topic of timetabling, I don't think there are any hints other than "here's a link that doesn't use the portal" and "classes can be put back to back" but if somebody wants to write up a thingy I'm perfectly happy to edit it into the new student post that's stickied. Incidentally, if somebody would like to overhaul that post with anything they think is important, I'm happy to have you do that

Centrelink just sent me a form asking me to confirm my relationship details, in which my partners name is incorrectly spelt.  So my guess is it's going to take a month and at least two cancellations of my payment for me to sort it out and stop hearing 'but that's not the name that's listed here'.

It's times like this I appreciate that I'm single.

...Because ease of Centrelink applications is totally the only reason i'm single...

Wait, so non-serious relationships (as in non de facto/married) have to be listed on those forms as well? I thought it was more for people who lived together etc.
