simpak lovely thanks heaps for your tips. I got 2 letters from Dawn last year so I was thinking of approaching her. I'll have a couple of weeks of tutes to see if anything comes up in my current subjects as well.

You guys are freaks with the amino acids. Argh I'm so behind! Haha. My subjects are way mixed up. Totally ahead on the maths and taking a L3 subject next semester but so behind in chem I can't take Biochem until 3rd year haha

Quick question: do we write up reports for practicals during the session in BIOL10002 (Biomolecules in Cells) like we have to in CHEM10006 (Chemistry for Biomedicine)?

You don't write up reports in Bio, just answer questions. You should have purchased the prac book by now, have a squiz at that.

Generally speaking, how do we get assessed during the practical then? Is it the answers to our questions?

am i the only one who genuinely finds biochem interesting? ; n ; not a huge fan of the current lecturer though. the one last semester was much more engaging.
i made flashcards for the amino acids during the holidays with the names on one side and the structure/codes/pKas/notes on the other and found that i picked them up pretty quickly. i was under the impression that we dont even need to know the actual structure this year though. it says learn in *some detail* the structures of side chains.... @ A @

To anyone that does physics:

What exactly is that blue lab book called? And where can I get one? (It's around $8 from what I've heard)

You can get it in the coop store; I've seen it there. It's just a prac book to write down results, assuming it's the same as the blue lab book I used last year for UMEP.  TBH, it's a massive waste as normal exercise books would work fine.

the answer to your question is in the biol workbook:

* In-class practical assessment (5 marks): May be one or more of the following:
1. Handing in written work at the end of the practical for marking
2. Showing your demonstrator a slide or drawing you have prepared
3. Completing a dissection or other technique, developing a hypothesis

Thanks - I saw that but I didn't really know what "handing in written work at the end of the practical for marking" meant. I guess we'll find out more specifics as it comes around.

@scribble: I find biochemistry interesting, but the amino acids lecture was really dry :C The stuff about tryptophan and cysteine was cool, though!

There are a heap of different things. In this one though, there are mainly questions. So you have some in prac assessment, that will normally be a drawing and a couple of questions, then after each prac you have to do an online test.
There are two pracs where you get marked on your dissection, so the demonstrator will come and ask you some questions about the relevant anatomy and you just have to answer them. If you do a shit dissection, that process will be much more difficult (if you're lucky though you'll get a nice one like we did and she'll just give you full marks for it anyway).

Okay guys if you don't need to learn the structure of the amino acids then you may as well drop out of the subject now because that's the only useful thing worth knowing in the entire course, that you don't already know because it's been taught 5000x (cough, DNA replication).

What appears to be harder than balls, my dear fellows, and rhymes with piological bsychology?

Oh dear fellows, wait till you get to genetic disorders and metabolism  ::)

I tried guessing who you were during the last GHS lecture but severely underestimated how many students are in that breadth class rofl. I'm putting my money on

a) lean, brown-haired man with blue and white plaid shirt, brown bookbag
 b) brown hair as well, dark t-shirt and green/black backpack
c) brown-blonde hair, broad-shouldered, blue and white striped shirt?

Due to the class size we'll pretty much be playing this game all semester
