So I'm a first year BCom student and have decided to underload during my first semester, by doing 3 subjects. Basically, I need to fit a breadth subject somewhere later. From my understanding, I have the choice between a summer semester or overloading later on, or just going veeery slowly and taking another 6 months to graduate. What is generally seen as the better choice?
In my opinion, staying an extra semester is nothing. I was in your shoes in my second year. I underloaded, did 3 subjects per semester, and was faced with this question - squeeze more subjects in over the holidays and graduate 'on time', or stick around for an extra semester.
At first I was dead set on finishing my degree on time because I wanted to graduate with all my friends. But then I realised that I needed my holidays to relax and unwind or I'd go insane from too much studying. So I decided to stick around for an extra semester - and I have no regrets. I'm in third year now, and I am set to graduate mid 2015. Then I plan to take the rest of the year off, go travel, and come back and do postgrad in 2016.
And I think this will work really well for me because I'd love a decent break in-between undergrad and postgrad.
Staying around for an extra semester is actually quite normal and there are lots of people who do this (e.g. people who go on exchange, people who have failed subjects before, and people who have underloaded etc.)
Plus, when you graduate mid-year, you graduate in Wilson Hall (I prefer graduating in Wilson Hall than Royal Exhibition Building).
It might be worth having a chat to a student advisor at your student centre about this. They can help plan your study plan for both scenarios (if you choose to do subjects over the holidays, or if you want to do an extra semester).
