Monash would just be a fallback option that you are trying to justify.

Pls. Stahp.

Depends who's doing the talking I suppose; it's a really hard word to translate properly. (Maybe that's why they included the hand gestures?)

haha these hand gestures were, shall we say, rather unambiguous :P

Also remember Sarkozy? There was a lot of interest and debate in the press about this one:

http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casse-toi,_pauv'_con_!

If our PM called someone a c**t I doubt there would be much debating going on, haha

How could I ever forget! When he said this, I had just started French at school as we were tasked to bring in an article from the French media and discuss it with the class; I brought in one about this.

La class a beaucoup ri mais j'ai gagne une detention parce que j'ai decide d'expliquer ce que signifiait l'expression. Eh bien...

Well, it's worth mentioning that the Leader of the House actually did actually call Bill Shorten a cunt the other day. Claimed he said "grub", but I'll bare my bum in Bourke st if that turned out to be true.

Con isn't quite as powerful though. It's more like dick in an informal sense. Kind of like Serbian, actually. Dick and cunt are equally bad. You'd hear them both used quite frequently, with neither being super offensive, which is kind of nice really.

My Spanish friends only taught me the words mari con, puta and te amo.

Maybe that's why i'm not good at making new Spanish friends.

Poofter whore I love you. That's yep, that's beautiful. Can just imagine that conversation:

-¡Oye! Maricón-puta, te amo

-Uhh...... está bien

So you're allowed to swear in French but not in English? Sounds harsh. Although I guess you could have waited until after...

We watched this film in Swedish class (note Swedish title...):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Show_Me_Love_(film))

There was a vocab sheet handed out with what seemed like 95% of Swedish slang/swear words because they were all used in the film. When it came to the word "fitta", which is an (unambiguous) translation for the English "c**t", our teacher literally could not bring herself to say it. When the class started saying it out loud to get the pronunciation right, her face got so red I thought it was about to catch fire.

Good times.

Yeah my point was that it's not as strong a word in French as it is in English. As I said (and you seem to agree), it's most often just used to call someone an idiot (e: or a dick/dickhead, depending on context).

"No mas por favor, senor! This is a family restaurant, you can't use that language here!"

Hahaha probably should've waited. My teacher was fantastic, she didn't mind if we swore so long as it was a) in French and b) it was part of actual conversation. The only problem here is that I got into a bit of a habit of it and swore conversationally during my VCE French oral :-X

I know I'm just repeating things people have said over and over, but -

Have faith in yourself! The worst thing is getting to the end and realising that you had all the ability the whole time, but you just didn't use it. Don't give up, follow your dreams, and all that :)

(And don't worry about your maths. It's not a concrete indicator of intelligence at all, nor a sign of ability. From what I've skimmed of this thread alone, there are a million things you're good at.)

Regarding technicalities etc., don't get too caught up in calculations and try to minimise worrying if you can. I know for a fact that I wasted a lot of time stressing out over ATAR calculators and study scores, and it wasn't helpful at all - towards the end I was ready to give up on some of my subjects because of that. In the end, you just have to do your best, don't 'abandon' any of your subjects, and remember it's never too late to pick up your game if that's what you need to do. Valjean is right - it's early times yet! Term 2 hasn't even ended.

Because it's fairly early in the year, it's super super super important not to give up. About this time last year, people in my English Language class were getting C or D on a SAC that ended up being scaled up to ~B in their final study score because their later work had improved that much. So if it's a SAC or test score you're worried about: focus on the next SAC, the next test, the final exam. That's what can really make a difference. Also keep in mind that - as far as I know - when it comes to scaling SACs, they can go up but never down.

I also agree with Valjean on how VCE can be really unpredictable. When people say things like "You have to get such-and-such score" or "You must do this-or-that subject" to get a good ATAR, take it with a grain of salt. There are a lot of ways to get the score you need, and there's no hard and fast rule.

As for how competitive and intense VCE gets, I feel like it's something that gets a huge emphasis at school and feels almost like a life-or-death situation, but in the end it's just one year of your life and it hardly dictates anything about your future, other than what you do in the subsequent year. At most you spend another year waiting to transfer to another degree, and that's not always a bad thing - if you're smart about your course preferences, there's a good possibility you might find that you prefer your second preference to your first. Go to the Open Days (as you're already planning) and keep an open mind. If a course looks like something you'd absolutely love, don't write it off as a last resort just because it's not unimelb. On the other hand, if you know what course you want to do and where, and you end up missing out on a place, there are so many opportunities to get there in other ways. If Melbourne is absolutely your favourite, there are still so many ways to get there after VCE. Your ATAR won't lock you out of anything.

But yeah, university is great. You've just got to get through VCE first. Keep at it! :D And listen to everyone else here, they give awesome advice, haha.

Thanks for that Nikoli; places things into perspective a little.

I guess Melbourne University is something that attracted me quite late, e.g. at the start of Year 12 rather than 11 or 10. But I can absolutely say (without visiting it though) that the general prestige of the university and the reputation, structure and interesting subject areas for the Bachelor of Arts course fascinate me. It would take something really good to change my first preference. But I will go to the university open days and enquire more.

Does anyone have an email address that I can harbour even more about the intricate details of the Melbourne Arts course? If not, I understand.

I am very pessimistic even at the best of times, but I look at your VCE scores and you have got however many 40's, one 50 and done specialist maths and all these hard subjects and I cannot even pass further - doesn't mean for one second I am not putting in the effort though!

Today I have put a flash card on top of my room saying: 93+. Somewhere around the ATAR range for the Melbourne Arts course.

And yes sometimes I do worry very intensely about the last SAC, exam or previous result. E.g. I got 27/30 for english but felt like I wrote the best essay of my life.... and this is my best subject, oh the irony...

I got 5/10 for a multiple choice SAC in economics, and i studied very hard and it is days like these that make me think that Melbourne Arts is just not for me. The short answer section I did well in though, so I am not completely stupid.

But thanks everyone again :)

I wouldn't take AN to be representative of the general populace at UoM. Sure there are many people with 98+ ATAR's, 50 SS's and what not, but on the other hand there are people like myself whose highest study score was a 37. In all likelihood there are people with lower SS's than me at UoM as well. (No offence to those who do post them) It is simply that those with the high ATAR's and SS's are more likely to publicize the fact as they are (rightfully) proud of their achievements.

What sort of information are you after?

Nothing too specific, even though I mentioned the word 'intricate'. By that I mean just a first hand account of the course by maybe a teacher or someone who has some involvement within it. Specifically some majors I may be interested in as well...

I am not expecting anything by the way, was just an inquiry.

I suppose so, but 37 is a fantastic score as well. Nevertheless, I understand that you need very good objective study scores to get into Melbourne.

HELP it turns out there's more content in the last 10 biochemistry lectures than the first 23 and I have to learn 14 more lectures, including the entirety of metabolism from scratch while somehow studying for four other subjects at the same time :'( :'( :'( :'(

Levi from what I can gather about 90% of your waking life is study, what bad life choices did you manage to make?

Taking time off from my 33 assessments to sleep and having days off. Also procrastinating regularly out of fear.
If it was just study, I could easily have done everything by now, but I spent my entire semester doing lots of study for microassessments and was too ill and exhausted to get actual lecture revision done :( I lost two weeks to being ill and one to doing my botany research essay, too. And I was an idiot and didn't apply for Special Consideration all semester, except to finish a single essay, and since I didn't go to the doctor I had no way to show that I was sick for ~four weeks of semester, one week bedridden.
I consider being sick to be a bad life choice, BEING VIOLENTLY ILL IS NOT A THING THAT SHOULD HAPPEN IN WEEK TWO AND THREE :(
I'm sure other people are feeling equally as stressed, though, so good luck to everyone else! D: I hope everyone manages to do as well as they're hoping this semester, especially all the terrified first years :))
(I think I'm going to have a repeat of last year, where my Sem Two is vastly better than Sem One due to increased work ethic and more interesting, intuitive classes.)
