I'm trying to assess how I can make my study more efficient compared to what I did for semester 1 and one area which has come up is pre-reading of the textbook references and the lecture notes. Would you say this is necessary or am I wasting (an absolutely massive amount of) my time? A lot of people I've spoken to don't seem to bother with it. :S

Wasting time. I always resolved to do it before the semester started and it was truly never worth it.

Anyone done BCMB30001 Protein Structure and Function?

Biochem wizards I need your wisdom in choosing my job profession...
I'm doing it this semester, and I've been requested to do a review on it, I don't think any AN regulars have done it.

I'm deciding on whether to do this or GENE30005 but I'm a genetics major so not sure if I will be disadvantaged. I did do BCMB20003 last year tho.

To anyone that has done Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics, does it matter if your workshops are different streams?

It sure would save a lot of time and actually give me some time to myself during the semester, but I still feel like I should be doing it haha. XD

You (or anyone interested in getting them back) could probably find a .gif template for it floating around on the internet; all you need to do is add text with a gif editor.

I'm planning to just turn up to one day of uni this entire week. It's almost amazing seeing how I would endeavour to turn up to every lecture in first year, and now I can't even bother showing up if I have 4 lectures on.

Don't bother...especially with BIOL10003. I hardly opened the textbook for it. If anything, what's more efficient for genetics is to put more focus on spamming the practise questions Dawn puts up etc. Unfortunately Robb's stuff needs some rote-learning, but it's not that much.

Generally I find pre-reading a waste unless it's directly assessed.

Is there a lab manual for research phys, and is that all we have to get?

^^I actually didn't find it as bad as everybody made it out to be though! Apart from that damn MST.

Actually, Stick, if you wanted to make the most of your time just watch all of the BIOL10003 lectures (before Dawn's series) at home at 2x the speed. I think Robb lectured pretty slowly and you'll just end up falling asleep at 8am anyway.

And don't turn up to Physics, they waste like 20 mins showing off stupid pracs in the middle of the lecture and you're much better off watching Khan Academy/Brightstorm videos than actually paying attention in lectures.

Don't bother with it because you'll be pre-reading a lot of non-essential stuff and will be wasting time in that sense. Just go to lectures, see if you understand the material, and if you need a further explanation or would like to get some more detail then take a look at the appropriate section of a textbook. I tried pre-reading in the first couple weeks of human physiology but I thought I could have used that time to complete practice questions based on lecture material. I think pre-reading also makes it easier to fall behind in other subjects.

Is there a lab manual for research phys, and is that all we have to get?
It should have already been posted on the LMS, look at the research phys homepage.
Lab coat + Manual + 2 a4 books to do your prac write ups in + perhaps a notepad to jot points down during pracs (i.e. drafts).

So what are everyone's feelings/thoughts on starting up uni again tomorrow?

I'm just hoping that I don't fall behind 10+ lectures in every subject at the start of swotvac again this semester (I think my record was being around 14 lectures behind for neuroscience). No idea how it got that bad.

I got that as well and am in same situation as you. I'm 90% sure that it's because there has been an extra class/practical or whatever that has been added :)
