Yep you can do a level 1 subject in second year as long as you don't do more than 125 points of level 1 over your whole degree (aka, no more than 10 level 1 subjects).

Thanks :)

If I were to major in biology, how much chem should I take to complement it?

It depends on what field of biology you want to major in (biochemistry? physiology?), but chances are you will need Chem 1 and 2 in first year
2012 ATAR: 99.20

If I were to major in this, which bio subjects would I remove to be able to get a sub-major in maths and stats? Are these major subjects the set ones, or can we choose which 'major subjects' we want to do?

You need at least first year chem (chem 1+2.) No harm in doing more, but that's all you need.

To do the sub-major in maths, take away any of the second year biology subjects and replace them with three maths subjects (depending on what you're interested in, you'd need at least Real Analysis and Vector Calculus.) I'd suggest keeping BCMB20003 - it makes the third year subjects a lot more manageable. For a major in biochem, you need BCMB20002 and BCMB20005 (it's possible to do BCMB30010 - Advanced Techniques without BCMB20005, but I'd do BCMB20005 anyway.)
BSc (Hons) 2015 Melbourne

PhD 2016-??? Melbourne

I want to be an architect.

Real analysis and vector calculus require calc 2, linear algebra, but I haven't taken calc 1, how should move the study plan around to include that?

One option is to take Linear Algebra over the summer, leaving you with Calc 1 in semester 1 and Calc 2 in semester 2. You might need to take Linear Algebra under the Community Access Program, so you'll pay full fees for it.

No need to take it under the CAP program. I just lost one of my level 1 breadths. You can do it in second semester (along with calc 2) as well.

You also don't need first year biology to do biochem, although it's worth doing at least one subject anyway, particularly if you haven't done high school biology.

Thanks, so if i do take another maths subject instead of my breadth, do you recommend doing calc 2 with linear algebra in sem 2, or calc one and linear algebra in sem 1?

The two subjects are independent, knowledge in one won't really help the other. That said, Calc 1 is regarded as being significantly easier than Calc 2, which might influence your decision. Most of my friends did Calc 2 / Linear Algebra and appear to have done fine.

There is no major difference unless there are other subjects you want to do and they only run in a certain semester.

I'm doing Commerce and plan to major in finance. I've got a free breadth for year 1 sem 1 and was wondering what people thought about the subject "Food for a healthy planet" for those who did it or are planning to? Sounds pretty interesting haha

check out the UoM subject reviews and ratings thread, people have reviewed it. that thread helped me so much when trying to figure out what subjects I'll be doing!

I did it as breadth in my first semester last year. I thought it was a fairly awful subject. There was a new lecturer almost every week so the subject felt disjointed, content was presented in a boring way, tutorials were okay but they didn't help with the final exam. As said in one of the subject reviews, this subject never gave an idea of how to answer questions, ie how much depth, what information was necessary.

The saving grace of this subject were the "forums" where a guest speaker gives a lecture on a particular area in their field. These were pretty interesting in my opinion and made writing a report about them quite easy.

The mid sem test was quite fair but the exam was a bit harder than expected and you'll be writing for the whole exam.

I totally agree with notveryasian! I did Food for a Healthy Planet in my First semester last year too, and I absolutely hated it. The content isn't the most captivating, and the exams consisted of non-stop writing. It was quite a vague subject in my opinion, as to how you could score well on the exam, and the tutes didn't really assist in that field either. That being said I have had a few friends who did really well in that subject.
