Did anyone get the Co-op bookshop membership that is $25? How long does the membership apply for and is it worth it? And what is the ME bank card that's joined with the membership card?

Most uni students I know have one. If you buy one textbook it pays for itself immediately (you shouldn't buy textbooks new from the coop anyway.) They sell a lot of lther things (including readers, subject manuals, lab books,) so it'll pay for itself soon enough anyway.

So yes, worth it.

I remember getting a $20 voucher for the Co-Op during O-week. Used it to help pay for the $25 membership fee. Best $5 I ever spent.

you can sell the membership back to them for 20 cant you?

edit: for those interested:

When you joined the Co-op you purchased shares in the Co-op Limited - a not-for-profit co-operative. You can sell your shares back to the Co-op and receive a refund for the amount you paid when you joined. To do this you need to have been a Member for more than 2 years. These are probably dumb questions but I'd appreciate it heaps if someone could help a jaffy out :P

Is there a requirement that you have to do two breadth subjects in first year, one in each semester? Cos I know you have to do a minimum of four throughout your degree, but study plan seems like it's forcing me to pick two at level 1. I wanted to use first year to explore a few different areas and keep a couple of majors open as possibilities and I'm worried I might have to get rid of one of my options :-\ I'm doing Arts fwiw, I dunno if that has any bearing on it.

Also, this is probably more of a niche question, but how much are the LOTE placement tests actually indicative of which subject you'll end up in? I took the test for German and it said I'd be placed in German 7, which is terrifying cos I'm pretty sure I'll be waaay out of my depth lol. Can I still enrol in German 5 (post VCE level) instead? Cos I feel like for the sake of both my sanity and my GPA I'd be better off dropping German entirely rather than starting at 7.

I'm not sure if this is different for other courses but we were told that for bsc you only have to do four breadth subjects which means in first year you don't have to do any. This is so science students can try things out before picking a major, but things might vary.

This may be a funny question (since I'm a Jaffy :P).... but what is Chem 1 like at Melb.
I pretty much flunked Chem in yr 12 last year because I fell way way way~~~ behind therefore as a result I didn't bother much at all and got a 25 which I really didn't expect in my opinion.

Is it manageable the content? I plan to not fall behind this time and see how I go. Do you reckon I will have a hard time since I assume the depth in Uni with Chem will be much more significant.

Sorry for asking so many questions

Nope, not at all. You could do none in first, two in second. Two in second, none in first. None at all for the entire year if you wanted. I, as one example, didn't do any breadths in the 1st semester of my second year, then did two breadths in my final semester in third year.

It doesn't matter how you take the subjects, only that you fulfil the requirements of your course as it is laid out in the handbook and manifested on the study plan.

The problem with going a little bit off the beaten path is that you may run into trouble with prerequisites, so make sure you've mapped out your study plan pretty well beforehand.

You'll find a few reviews in the subject review thread.

Hahah sorry!! We were actually supposed to have done timetabling last Thursday but (unsurprisingly) there was a major IT problem so they had to move it to today :P

It's usually quite manageable keeping up to date with lectures and lecture content in first year. Just remember they have placed the cutoff at 25 for chemistry 1 as they believe you have acquired the necessary knowledge you need to pass (and hopefully excel in) the subject :)

There are lots of opportunities to seek help if need be: The chemistry learning centre in the chemistry building (I recommend even going in their just to engage in chemistry discussion if you don't have any specific questions to ask, the best way to learn is by teaching others), emailing or making an appointment time to meet with lecturers or tutors in person, rewatching parts you dont understand in lectures (provided they have been recordeed on lectopia), asking your tutor at the end of tutorials (definitely attend these as well as your lectures), asking other people taking the subject for help. You'll be fine! :)
