Former BIOM20001 students: Is it necessary to memorise the free energy values for all the metabolic reactions? I know which reactions have positive free energy values and which reactions have negative free energy values (and the reaction that has a free energy value of zero) but I struggle to recall the precise numbers. I assume it would be more important to just know which reactions are favourable and unfavourable (and what is done to make unfavourable reactions under standard conditions favourable in cellular conditions) but knowing this subject they'll probably throw in a specific number question in the upcoming mid-semester test somewhere. :/

EDIT: I don't know why I just don't email Terry. At least that way I'll know for sure. XD I'll send an email to him but I'm still interested to hear your input. :)

Biochem last semester didn't require knowing the free energy values for the metabolic reactions, if that helps
But I can't guarantee that you won't be asked to know which steps have positive or negative free energy changes

If it's just a matter of positive and negative, I can handle that. If I need to know precise numbers, I will be very sad. Thank you very much for your help. :)

I was assured by Terry last sem that the exact numbers weren't needed

I mean, biochem isn't THAT rote-crazy, right? Right? (I wish it wasn't...)

I think there was one or two he wanted us to memorise. The reduction/oxidation of NADH/NAD and ATP as well. We didn't have to memorise all of them.

But yeah, just email Terry, he'll know.

No need to remember exact values but I at least knew whether a reaction was positive or negative, and it's something that has come up in the past. Usually it's the step with the massive free energy (I've forgotten which one). So you're in the right position atm.

Unless they want a massive riot from angry students I doubt they will be that pedantic on your MST. There's no point learning the exact value because the only thing that matters is whether its spontaneous or not.

Thanks for all your answers. Terry is on leave so it turns out he won't be able to answer my question anyway. :P

Anyone here doing or has done MAST20004 Probability? I don't know if I'm just not good at probability or if these assignments are hard...

Can someone explain what the Dean's list is?

I realise that it's basically for the top 3% of the students, do they take your accumulative WAM/GPA? Or do they just consider that particular year's GPA/WAM?

for example, say your GPA was in the top 15% in your first year and your second year marks were in the top 2%, however your overall GPA was in the top 8%, would you still be in the dean's list in your second year?

It's just the year in question.

Dress professionally, but there's no need to wear a suit or anything ('smart casual' or 'business casual'.) Like any other job interview.

It's just the year in question.

So technically if you have not performed well in one year, and do extremely well the other, you might still get a Dean's list because it only counts that particular 100 credit scores you undertook that year.

Thanks

I got my letter for 2013 right after my last exam for Semester 1, 2014. It takes ages.

Why are the HIV lectures for biom30002 the biggest pain i have ever come across in my years of university (excluding the entire physics for biomedicine subject)?

So....... much...... information....
