3 months till end of year exams and instead of studying more, I am becoming more slack and procrastinating more than ever. I started so well at the start of the year. I completed the whole Unit 3 and Chemistry and Physics as well as the entire Methods course and almost the entire Spesh course before Year 12 even started. I also read my English books. As a result I haven't been doing much study in Semester 1 and the only study I did was for the night before a really important SAC and the practice exams for mid years. However now that Semester 2 has begun, I actually haven't done any study whatsoever! Does anyone have any tips for me and the countless students that are procrastinating everyday?

I can't just simply turn off the computer because I don't actually have textbooks. All my textbooks are in PDF format and I need them to be able to do questions from. Also the answers to the questions are in PDF form. However when I go on a computer, I never get any study done. I always end up opening my browser and checking Facebook and going on random sites. One link leads to another and it gets worse when I start to watch a video on Youtube because then I just keep clicking on related videos and by the time I know it, an hour has passed! I tried turning off my internet and that helps a bit but sooner or later, I decide to have a break and I start to procrastinate again.

Going to the library always works but I don't have my computer with me so to read the PDF I need to look at my tiny iPhone screen and also I can't have the answers and the questions on the same screen like I can on the computer so it takes ages to do questions and check them. I end up wasting time this way and also travelling to and from the library consumes a lot of time.

A strange form of procrastinating is this. I love maths, so I tend study maths more than any of my other subjects. However I am falling behind in my other subjects for this reason alone. I do maths because I know I will finish it but I don't do, say english, because I believe I won't be able to finish it and it will be hard. However english is my worse subject and if I don't start on it soon I will do really bad at the end of the year. I know this, yet I can't start to study english. I haven't even read the books!

Gaming is another problem. I think I may be addicted because I have friends that play as well and they always ask me to play at night and I want to play too so I end up wasting the whole night playing games with them. Sometimes I'm just about to start some homework and then they ask me to play and I put aside my homework, soon enough its time to sleep and I get no study done. I know I shouldn't be playing but I still do it anyway because I think of the fun I could be having and not about the consequences after. I know this is stupid but I just can't help it.

Here's a typical example of how I procrastinate:
Today is Sunday. I wake up at 12 because I've been going to sleep too late the whole week because of either procrastinating, talking to people, playing games. So I already wasted half the day. So I turn on the computer, because I need to check Facebook and Youtube just a bit and then I will study. Not long after, my friend tells me to play games with him and I play and before I know it, its 5PM. We stop playing now and I get my study out. I decided to do some Chemistry so I did like one question and then I went to check Facebook again and before I know it's 8PM. I haven't even had dinner yet. Now I'm still writing this thread. Someone help me.

Are you my long lost twin? lolol Same as me D:

OK I am currently having a war against myself and procrastination. Here's what I've done:

  • Entrusted my Facebook account to someone. (I don't know the password now)
  • Uninstalled all my games, MSN, Skype, etc.
  • Removed all bookmarks from browser.
  • Changed Windows Theme to Windows 98 and wallpaper to plain black.
  • Made my computer on startup automatically open my PDF reader with all textbooks loaded.

Ironically, this very forum is also a major distraction, and its my homepage as well...sigh...ATARNotes is like a double-edged sword...it can be a horrible distraction but also a valuable resource...
Hopefully my productively will increase heaps from this :D

My sentiments exactly. Try downloading white noise and listen to it to block out distractions. If you listen to it for a while it sounds like a beautiful waterfall :D

How are you going with this? :P

I have done so much work in the past two days!

Including last night and tonight, I have finished a chapter of questions in Chemistry, finished all the questions from my detailed study in Physics, read a couple of chapters for my English Text and right now I'm doing exercises for Spesh (done 2 so far and still going). I've also been sleeping at 10-11 now and it feels great! I don't even feel bored, well not yet...For some reason I've been checking this website more and more since its basically the only reason I'm still connected to the internet. I guess it's still a form of procrastination but compared to before, it is much better!

download Cafe del Mar Volume 16. It helps me take notes for long periods of time - at high pace lol.....it's also great for listening to while doing maths....most other music stops me from concentrating, but this album is amazing!

I'm thinking if people really think it's a huge distraction we can make it such that you can only view/contribute to topics in your subject sections :P Of course for whatever time you nominate.
vce: english, methods, spesh, chemistry, physics, geography.

I have a chrome extension/add-on thingy called StayFocusd, automatically blocks pre-selected websites after a pre-determined amount of time per day, eg. for me it blocks wikipedia, youtube, facebook, imdb, games sites, this website of course :D, etc. I get 1 hour/day, then it turns off after 11pm so I can use anything if I need to, but basically it clears up my studytime for studying, I recommend it.
I won the GAT: 49/50/50.
