Given, there are heaps of new classrooms, and you can obviously tell they're going for a flipped classroom learning approach.

Not sure what the general consensus is for such approach, but personally I think flipped classrooms are great. I've always found it a significantly more efficient use of time and a more efficient way of learning; reading through material at home and consolidate it in a classroom setting, rather than learning in class and consolidating at home. Glad to see Monash trying it out :)

'EDIT: Also, can't remember where this was discussed, but it seems that instead of activities running from 5 past the hour to 5 to the hour (e.g. 10:05 - 10:55), they are indeed starting on the hour and finishing 10 to the hour (e.g. 10:00 - 10:50). Confirmed in the unit guides, and lecture recordings now seem to run from 9:58 - 10:53 to suit.'

Are you positive? If this is true just shows how out of touch Monash is. Do they expect  us to get to lectures instantly once one is over?

Or perhaps they have built portals to every lecture and decided to keep things under wraps.

Either way I'll be very impressed except the more likely answer is one I'll be impressed for the wrong reasons with.

Whether lectures start at x.05 and finish at x.55, or start at x.00 and finish at x.50, that still gives students 10 minutes to get to lectures without the use of portals.
✌️just do what makes you happy ✌️

Haha good pick up monsieur, I may have called out Monash too hastily there.

I guess this was just one of those changes for the sake of changing something. No real biggie

My O-week tip (Clayton): For anyone thinking about getting a MSA membership - buy it online, and collect the sticker (for your student ID) when you get into uni. You'll be able to head up to the new student recreation library on level 1 campus centre, and skip the queue. I had to wait about 20-30 minutes today in line instead  :( It's $10 this year!

still haven't got my MSA/or joined/rejoined any clubs LOL - will probably get to that on wednesday  ::)

Most of my subjects only have 2 lectures though in past years there may have been 3 they might just try to cram all the info. Also in the past I've heard some of the 2nd year pracs were  optional but appears not to be the case this year.

I'm not really a fan of a flipped classroom mainly because teachers/tutors never actually do it properly.

Also I wonder which retailers will be in the new building.

Pretty sure you need your student id to get MSA (they add a sticker to your student id, there's no seperate MSA card).

"Counter Faculty Handbook" is here --->https://msa.monash.edu/app/uploads/2018/02/CFH_Doc_digital4.pdf not too sure how useful it will be for everyone but definitely worth a look.

They'll put it on your transport concession card / other id if you ask nicely.

Hahahah so  I've seen some of the new lecture theatre layouts thanks to O-Day photos  from friends.

I don't know what fancy name they're calling it, so instead of the technical term I'm going to refer to it as those really badly designed lecture theatres from now on.

Sometimes I wish I could ask the higher ups what were they thinking?  some of these decisions made are shocking.

What's bad about them?

I believe it's called the flipped classroom approach others have said here.

I think it's the wrong approach for an Extra large university.

Are any of you guys going to this https://www.facebook.com/events/277777136089133/ tomorrow night? I'd love to see you guys there if possible. Plus it's run by the Science Society and Biomed society, so it should appeal to most of the people on the forum here

Personally, I actually liked the flipped classroom approach (because my campus is small and very big on this active learning thing)- allowed me to learn the content in the way I wanted, whilst making the lectures way more interactive and enjoyable- heck one of my lecturers interrupted their lectures last year by showing us photos of her trip to Greece; and another told us stories of when she worked in industry all the time, something that wouldn't exactly happen in a standard lecture :)
