Suppose there's a function f(x). How would you express each of the following transformations in words using the terms dilation, translation and reflection?

f(2x)

f(-x)

2f(x)

-f(x)

f(x+5)

Could someone please help me with Qn 1fi from VCAA 2013 Exam 2

Thanks

for Question 2 (h) of the VCAA 2014 exam I dont understand where the marking scheme gets the terminals for the integral?
They used some manipulation of the differential equation. Also in 2(d) you find that the height is 6/(3rd root of pi) in addition to the earlier statement the statue is 1 m tall.

f(2x)

f(-x)

2f(x)

-f(x)

f(x+5)

f(2x) : dilation factor 1/2 from the y-axis
f(-x): reflection in the y - axis
2f(x): dilation factor 1/2 from x-axis
-f(x): reflection in the x-axis
f(x+5): translation 5 untis in the negative direction of the x-axis

also, for 2011 Q4(f) why do we equate dt/dx to less than or equal to 0? why not just equal to 0? why can it be less than 0?

Are we meant to complete the Methods 1 and 2 exam in pencil or pen? My teacher didn't tell us what we were supposed to use.  :(

Both pen or pencil are fine.

Thank you for replying so fast (: So they won't get upset if we use pencil? I'm not 100% confident with writing in pen so that's a relief

Nah, I used pencils in all my maths exams and recieved Study scores.

I don't think many people would be confident using pen over the whole exam :)

2008 methods exam 2, question 3

The x coordinate of c is 1 as can be seen by the diagram. B is (1,8) so there is 8 Units of the antidote at the end of day 1. TJ then takes another capsule containing 16 Units of antidote. So the 8units that remains in his body+ the 16 Units he takes= 24 Units. Hence (1,24)

Thanks but how do you get XP= sq(3)/2

Thanks but how do you get XP= sq(3)/2

From the diagram on pg 14 of the exam. The coordinate P is (2pi/3, root3/2) and X is directly below it and lies on the x-axis hence XP = the y-coordinate = root3/2

Which aspect are you confused with?
I'll start off with the first quesiton to see if it can help you with the others.

I usually get confused with how to approach probability questions, but I understand your explanation! So for the second part would it just be 1-16/81 ? and is the third part (2/3)^6 ?
