International students aren't eligible for concession tickets, rightly or wrongly so (not getting into this debate). None the less it sucks for you.

Myki is slighly cheaper and you can register your card online, so, if you ever lose it, you can transfer your credit to another card. Whereas with the old metcard paper ticket, if you lost it, you are fucked. I dont like how they can track you using the myki though and that they keep that data but hey each to their own.

Personally i still use the metcard because one im politically opposed to the whole myki system and i was kind of hoping if enough people stuck on metcards they'd decide to scrap it, two i dont need to cause a massive pile up on the barriers and three it just seems like more hassle than its worth.

Take into account when and how often you'll be traveling as well. If its only once or twice a week a yearly might not be the most cost effective option. I know they sell 5 x daily and 10 x 2 hour tickets. So, that'll be great if you dont go to uni 5 days a week. You can kind of scam the 2 hour tickets as well, if you're close to the next hour, it counts it as being the next hour, so you get like...3 hours. If you use them after 6pm (i think) its valid until 3am the next day.

As a carrier of the 10 x 2 hour metcard, you do actually get 3 hours. :P And yes, after 6pm, that trip is valid until 3am the next day. :)

So, why would people get metcards not myki? I don't understand. They are clearly better.

It s a pain to top them off and they randomly don't work at times. Furthermore, the Monash ID card conflicts with the myki if you scan them both at once :(

Myki's had a few issues throughout its rollout, including computer glitches and over-charging. I personally still prefer to use the Metcard system, but you just use whatever is cheaper for you. :)

I've never been over-charged on the bus, but I love it when the machines not working and I'm forced to have a free ride.

I love the "I can't speak English" types that ramble on with a random language to the bus driver until the bus driver gives up and lets them on. From there they converse in fluent English to their mates :D

Aren't metcards still cheaper if you buy 10x 2 hour ones?

Nah, myki always gives you the same price as the bulk 5 x daily and 10 x 2 hourly metcards.  It is more expensive to buy single use metcards than to use myki.

As for topping up, it is a pain in the ass...but if you use auto top up then it is fine and you never have to worry about it again.  It is actually quite good.  Whenever your balance falls below some threshold which you set, they top up your account with a set amount immediately using funds from your bank account or credit card.

Only thing is unless you already registered for a myki during the "free myki registration" stage ages ago, you'd need to pay $10 (I think) just to procure the plastic card itself. So while you may save money on each trip, you'd need to commit to travel long term on myki and public transport to get that money back.

For one time travelers, it's not worth paying the upfront card fee.

Edit: Sorry, it's no $10. No idea where I got that number from. It's $6 for full fee and $3 for concession/students.

True but at the moment, you have no choice but to by a myki unless the govt does something.  Short term paper myki tickets are being abandoned.  Once metcard is gone, you'll probably have to buy one.  But that having been said, I'd be amazed if the govt doesn't do something for infrequent users and tourists.

And the cost of a myki is $6 full fare and $3 concession.

I got sent a child myki during this free registration period around 2 years ago (when I was 15); it's just a standard myki, but says "child" on it.
AFAIK the 'child myki' uses the same rates as the 'concession myki' (I'll be going to uni from this year, and I'm eligible for concession)

Does anyone know if I would need to reapply for a 'concession myki' or simply continue to use the 'child myki' that I have?

mm i see. thanks guys for all that.

I don't think I will be buying the yearly pass.

For the first month of uni I will get a monthly pass just to see how often I will go to uni (or just stay home listen to lectures).
Then, just buy 2hr passes or daily every time i need to go. mmmmmm

I hope you are right :

Don't buy separate 2hr cards, just buy a 10x 2hr and save it for when you need it. Also, if you use the card twice in a day, it turns into a daily, so it can be pretty handy.

Yeah, just try the monthly pass for a start. I think the yearly pass is probably more intended for workers and things because you get like...one month off uni during semester 1 and semester 2 and you finish in november and don't start again till like march. So, theres a lot of dead time there.

Hmm well if it's  possible you could always car pool and pay a portion for  petrol costs. But then you'd need a friend with a car, lives around you somehow and goes to the same uni..
