Internet Plans and Such.

I don't know if I'm making this thread for any particular purpose or to vent some rage but I just want to talk about my experience with my internet service provider over the last few days.

Firstly my house has two internet devices, a wireless network from a home gateway device (family access) and an elite wireless device (for myself). The family gets access to 12gb a month for an excessive amount of ~90. I spend ~50 for 3gb every 1-2 weeks.

Sadly this costs me a lot of money, and I was faced with the option of only being able to complete online units to be able to gain a tertiary qualification. However with such a small amount of usage for such an excessive cost I find that I would be unable to watch lectures or be able to participate in discussions with others completing similar degrees for information. If worse comes to worse, I may have to move away, however that in itself will cost a lot of money.

I went to my local member of parliament, and they talked to Telstra Country (if you hadn't guessed my provider yet) who later contacted me today questioning me on details of my account and so forth and came to the conclusion that I would not be able to get ADSL due to excessive data loss. I was wondering if anyone has been put in a similar situation to this and how they may have gone around it. The local TAFE does deakin courses, but being limited to only business and accounting courses, whereas I want to major in information technology I feel my choices limited at this current time.

TPG?

Explain.

Just my luck.

Also I forget to mention that my family are now in a plan due to their wireless so I was hoping that they would swap to ADSL for us.

Give me some details on TPG, may ring them tomorrow for myself and get my parents to keep their internet.

It would suck, not being able to get wired internet. How far out do you live? Really the only option is wireless. Maybe try Optus, because they have some different stuff to Telstra, but if that doesn't work you're out of luck mate...

Have you considered Internode? I'm currently with them and they're highly reliable - only about 4 extended dropouts in the 4+ years I've been with them.

Not sure about their wireless or if they provide it though.

And to put it out there, I had an extended outage (1 week) during Melbourne's timetabling period. I was really unhappy with it so I called them up and gave them a good verbal assault.

I live approximately 10 or so km from the exchange, but the fact is if my neighbour can get it, then why can't I? Telstra just don't want to upgrade the exchange seeing it is so old, but in fact it is screwing a lot of people in my community over.

I've heard good things, but I really want to avoid a wireless plan and go for a ADSL connection for usage and speed reasons.

I'd much rather usage then speed, but anything ridiculous as dial-up isn't worth trying for.

Well to put it simply, Internode is on the premium side. Don't expect large bandwidth quota - they do however make up for it with their exceptional call centers and response times.

Try your number with Internode, what plans does it bring up?

Not that bad.

That's a stretch I gotta say, Mine is $50/60gb on the old Reach plans. But I don't get why they even offer the $59.95 plan for 5gb when there's such a huge discrepancy with the next one, where, for only $10 more, you get 12 times more bandwidth ???

Can I show you something worse?

Compared to this horrific plan.

ADSL is better than I thought, but do those prices apply only if you bundle with a telephone?

The mobile plans are shocking, and it's over a 24 month plan. If I'm not mistaken, Internode's minimum contract is only 6 months. I remember a time when BigPond was offering 200mb for $29.95. Yes, two-hundred megabytes, one-fifth of a gig.

Old times. I remember being with iinet having unlimited dial up for $20 a month. Those were the days.

Anyways, its usually 10-20 dollars more expensive on top of all those plans, regardless of wireless or ADSL.

iiNet bought out Internode actually - the transaction completed yesterday for $105 million.

Just making sure; you're eligible for those BigPond plans right? If so, the $50/50gb is a nice option, and you know it's Telstra's service so the quality of service is the best money can buy.

I'm only eligible for the wireless, I was making the point that by comparison that they are actually quite ridiculous.

I would rather the 200gb plan just for the extra 150. The point of my original post is that the exchange is to weak and I would have significant data loss.

Oh, yeah my bad, I see your point now. That's ridiculous. Even on the 15gb plan you'd drain it easily with online lectures and stuff. Sorry to see you're in such a tight situation :( There really should be an exemption for you and your studies. No matter what you do it will cost a lot.
