Tired when I come home from school
« on: February 03, 2012, 07:17:41 pm »

Year 12 started on Wednesday for me, but everyday when I come home from school I am extremely tired and can't concentrate enough to do any homework.
Does anyone else feel the same or is it just me?
I've tried drinking energy drinks and they work quite well surprisingly. I think I might just stash up a heap of "Monster" drinks for when I get home from school each day...

You'll get used to it in a week or so :) Your holiday routine was probably a lot different to your school-day routine.

Yeah, what Rohit said. You're probably just used to being a massive sloth from all that holidaying. :)

Don't succumb to energy drinks! Exercise and healthy eating, despite sounding cliche, actually really help your energy and concentration levels.

Last year I had to travel an hour and a half to get home from school, which could be draining. If you find yourself still tired after school by, say, Week 2, try staying back at the school and studying instead of going home.

I spent three days a week in an empty classroom after school last year, and got so much more work done in that time than at home. In fact, except for during SWOTVAC, I pretty much did no study at home, just stayed back after school.

Take a nap if you need, usually helps pretty well

Try to keep a steady sleeping pattern and use sleepyti.me to know what times to go to bed/wake up (adhering to that website works really well). I find eating some fruit or going for a run helps if I feel a bit lethargic. Maybe even just having a shower to refresh yourself could be beneficial.
Also drink lots of water. Take a drink bottle to every class, make it a game to see how many times you can finish your drink bottle in one day. I think you should drink at least one litre per 25kg of body mass.
Do NOT resort to energy drinks or coffee.
In a worst case scenario I think Berocca isn't too harmful.

As said above you just have to re-fix your sleeping patterns, I remember last year I was absolutelty wrecked after the first week of school, since I tried to shift my sleeping pattern by 4 hours in one night. Once you get back into the swing of things, you won't have time to feel tired, the year will fly by. Try to start going to sleep earlier and stick to a certain time.

Have to add that in most of my classes those who actually got a good sleep were the ones who performed better during school (although this could be more to do with how disciplined you are with yourself). And as said by a lot of people above ENERGY DRINKS ARE NOT GOING TO DO YOU ANY GOOD, if anything they are going to have the opposite effect (relative to education/school e.t.c)

So don't worry, you will work back into the routine and you won't feel tired (for now, by the end of the year is a different story, relative to burning out e.t.c) but for now, just try to get back into the pattern.

Definitely don't drink energy drinks, those shit are bad for ya man, if you're tired mentally, then go do some exercise and take a break from studying. If you're tired physically, then take a nap.

this happened to me alot during year 12, and i just went to sleep, not the best solution though.
i suggest u try increasing ur sleep at night by 1 or 2 hours,
study in manageable blocks (no need to go burn yourself out)
eat healthier immediately
and exercise, i liked to run
i tried coffee, it seldom worked,
i had this tired feeling today too, and atm i've been getting lots of sleep but i eat like 2 meals a day (cereal + dinner + chips or something) so i think the diet part is the key here.

What's your diet like?
Eat lots of vegetables and protein throughout the day. I think that helps me a lot, I never feel tired.

You just started school, your body has to adjust to your new unfortunate lifestyle.

2. Exercise TONS

Best bit of advice ever. I did this and it cleared my mind to unprecedented extents. Exercise when you're stressed.

Seconded.
It doesn't have to be a proper sweat-inducing activity. Just a short jog outside in the fresh air really helps. I sometimes did this multiple times in one night if I had a massive study sesh. It really helps the concentration and helps you sleep better later.

I just had something to eat when I got home, then went on facebook...etc. and napped for around an hour or two. When I woke up, I'd be feeling awesome :)
