I understand, but I'm just saying that although bribery isn't the right word, it's not exactly a fair reward. Like I don't think parents should reward their children with material goods - just because it places too much emphasis on their worth and like I said before, it's like an athlete and medals - you need to work for the thrill and the desire rather than for the medals. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that what they're doing is wrong - it's, of course, just my own opinion.

Well, now that you say you want them too, I guess you gotta be like me! Find a job, get a good income and buy the things you want :)

Yeah I definitely agree with Paul.
Is it really that hard to get into MHS?

It's not that hard, like I know a lot of "high-average" students who got into MHS. But I also know a lot of "higher average" students who missed out, so hmm!

Is it a standardised test/can't really be studied for but people do it anyway, or knowledge based?

You can definitely study for it! I covered year 10 math, a bit of essay writing and I got in.

From my experience... yes you can study for it. You just have to learn how to be quick and efficient in your work. Last year I had one test where there was 60 math questions and I had to finish it in 30 minutes and ended up guessing the last ten compared to my friend who got tutored and finished it with 5 minutes spare. Although from my experience.. MHS test is all about pride so if you don't get in.. :P

Edit: Forgot to say that it wasn't just maths but guessed the last few for 3 out of 4 multiple choice exams.. and those 3 exams gave me 3 superiors so luck can come into play too :O

You don't even need to study ahead, all the questions, from my somewhat hazy memory, were well within the capabilities of the standard year 8 student. Like the above said, it's more about being able to apply your skills efficiently. You might be less intelligent than someone else but just perform better than them in tests. And I guess the essay writing component comes down to natural talent or how advanced you are in English/how much practice you've had.

So I've been wondering what the driving force behind people in ATAR Notes is.. Since we're all members of this fine online community, I'm going to go ahead and assume that we would all like to maximise our ATAR scores (or formerly ENTER score).

Is it because of your parents forcing you?

If so, if your parents didn't push you, would you care?

Is it to pursue a certain career?

Do you just want to do as well as you can?

To get rich?

To gain respect?

i'm just an OCD perfectionist. I can't cope with failure and always want to do well. That's why I aim high :D

Surgeon, hi, may I ask why did you decide to stay back at H even being offered a spot in MHS?

I wanted to go but my parents couldn't drive me to and from school everyday and they weren't trusting enough of public transport to let me go to and from school everyday with it.

Do you live really far away from MHS? Public transport isn't too bad:) That would have been disappointing for you.

I don't think being a high achiever is anything to be proud about it really.. it's just the outcome of your hard-work and interest. Personally, school for me is about learning and gaining knowledge. I'm not here to obtain a particular degree, impress my parents, make a certain amount of money, or boost my ego, and that in my opinion is what education should be about.. But I'm not saying it's bad to have those types of motivation to propel you to academic success but personally I find that the true purpose of education is to gain knowledge and understanding, to stimulate your mind and to look at the world differently.

Oh, understand understand! My friend too gave up his spot in MHS because of the distance. Good luck to you in your final exam!

I know guys who took V-lines in, going on public transport is just one of the many aspects of "city-school" life imo and one I wouldn't give away for anything :)
