Physical confrontations

After witnessing a bit of a scuffle today (which was right in front of the cafe, in the middle of the quad, in the area looked directly at by senior members of staff and other teachers from their offices), I've been thinking about whether it is ever appropriate or acceptable to allow a verbal disagreement into a physical confrontation.

This particular fight occurred because of something that happened on the weekend at a party and was broken up pretty quickly.

If anyone has ever hit someone, or instigated a fight out of anger, please post in this thread saying what you felt like at that point in time, why you decided to take the confrontation to a physical level and what the repercussions were.

I trained Wing Chun Kung Fu for 2 years and kick boxing and aikido concurrently for 4 years (interesting facts - I can do the splits and kick the top of a standard door way :P) before quitting at the end of year 10 so I had more time to focus on my studies.

Despite my extensive training, I have never felt as though I needed to escalate an argument or disagreement to a physical level. If someone attacked me, I would disable them, put them in a lock and take them to the ground - holding them there until they calm down and agree to talk things through. Don't see how I could justify hitting someone, though.

Assuming that they politely shouted out "HEY SURGEON, I AM GOING TO ATTACK YOU, ASSUME YOUR DEFENSIVE POSE."
I've never struck someone in the face with my fist.
On the justifications on hitting someone I absolutely would. If I were attacked and had the opportunity to defend myself I'd be hitting anything within reach.

i punched someone in the face when i was in year 8.

they were in year 10.
...sad much? i mean, yr 10 vs yr 8 - yr 8 wins? omg.

anyway- depends on the situation.
for me it was on racial grounds  i think it was justified. but thats just my thoughts.

Physical conflict should absolutely always be the last resort - you should exhaust all other avenues before going there. But there are times, imo, when it is justified.

Only in self-defence would I ever become physical (just because I don't want to get shit from my teachers), and even that is frowned upon at my school >_>

similar thing happened to me, when i was in year 9, a (rather large) year 8 called me a f***ing arab, so i provoked him, waiting for him to punch first, ducked it and hit him in the ribs. then a teacher came over and broke it up before it got interesting...

Tho srsly don't hit people unless in self defence or in the defence of others. Even then avoid hitting just try to disable

The defence of their physical safety?
If I were with a girl friend and someone just up-and-groped her and I hit him, would you consider that defence of others?

Any idiot can swing his fists around.

Looks much better when you tornado kick or spinning back kick in the face, knocking them out cold when they're charging at you. This way, you also keep your distance and take care of them before they can touch you.

Or seemingly effortlessly flipping someone over with their own momentum before putting them in a neck lock and watching them go purple until they tap out, putting them in danger of having their esophagus crushed or passing out. You can't just expect them to tap out, though. Should probably say something like "Chill out and I'll let you go, bro. Tap when you're ready". Squeeze for a split second longer then let go.

got whacked in the nuggets with a hockey stick by an aloof idiot friend, something flared up that's never been anything like anything i've felt before, and i started beating the guy who did it much to the whooping and cheering of our other friends. great group i have.

he had it coming to him, but i didn't conscientiously decide to attack him, it just happened because i flared up and gathered my senses again pretty quickly and stopped

normally i'm the placid pacifist, t'was really unlike me lol

I'm really interested in what people say in response to Brenden's comment/question...I can just imagine my boyfriend being like yeah its fair enough and some swear words. But being groped doesn't exactly put you in immediate danger necessarily, but obviously is very disrespectful to both parties. Would you be hitting someone for 'protection' or would that be punishment or teaching them a lesson?

Yeah I'd rather just headbutt someone. May not "look much butter" but it's pretty simple.

Attacking someone with what is probably one of your most sensitive body parts? Not a good idea.

Definitely not. It wouldn't have been too difficult for him to walk away from the situation. If the bullying had been going on for as long as he said it had, the little kid cold have easily been suspended or expelled, stopping him from bullying anyone anymore.
