you're aiming for a 50 aren't you? You're a genius, wow. You know so much.
hahah i would actually cry if i got a 50, but it'd take a massive internal error at vcaa for that to happen :P
i'm just aiming for 40+ atm, i think that's hopefully a reasonable aim? idk english marking is weird and confusing so i don't want to get my hopes up.

Great stuff. I think i haven't come across beauty because my school didn't study the ones focused on beauty, rather the condemnation of authorities, horror, nature, pity of war.
that's the crap thing about studying poems i reckon. everyone studies different poems (cos obviously there's not enough time to do all of them), which makes some prompts easier for some people and really hard for others.
(this is becoming a wilfred owen thread lol whoops)

One of the students in my year level had a dream that the theme based topic for The Reluctant Fundamentalist would be the following.

"Fucking Arab". Do what extent do you agree.
(that's a quote from the book - I'm no racist)

I'd love this topic!
I'm not being racist but I cried laughing at this. Just imagine.

'Despite the bleak content of his poems, Owen ultimately contends that war is a good thing.' Discuss. ;)

Sorry @AmericanBeauty, currently stuffing my face with macaroons and listening to classical aka unable to Skype, besides, I am unfortunately doing Maus and not the poems ;)

I hope there's some kind of editing error and they've accidentally put in a picture of something random like in the 2012 revs paper (a robot in a painting depicting an event in 1917 Russia).

I found this prompt for conflict which I'm really finding challenging at the moment (courtesy of one of my friends haha)

To all you conflict context people out there what would your ideas be for this topic:

"Conflict reveals what is wrong and what is right in the world"

My problem here is the second half (in the world part) how on earth would one argue this expository form?

If you're talking about the 'what is right' part (guessing, I'm doing ID&B), you could talk about people standing up for their beliefs/rights and therefore creating conflict in order to change society? I guess that conflict does, in many ways, reveal man's need to challenge what is 'wrong'. If you're specifically asking about the 'in the world' part then no clue.

Hey all,
just wondering if anyone knows the specification of a dictionary for the english exam?
I have a "schoolmate file" one, it's a dictionary but A4 size, would that be alright?
WOT? Do they need to be a certain size? MY dictionary is literally arms length.

Hey! I do Whose Reality but the ideas I'd use in expository for this prompt would be structured around conflict and struggle enabling the exploration and interrogation of principles worth sacrificing for and the practical consequences of that process.

Perhaps discuss how it is that conflict enables us to determine the relative importance of different constructs of rights. I.e. Perhaps we support global rights to gender equality, but are weighed down by the practical consequences that are a result of challenging often large and powerful countries whose resources we rely on. (Read: Saudi Arabia)

Otherwise, maybe everything I say is all rubbish anyway  ;) ;)

There might be ONE word you need defined in the language analysis - don't stress! Unless it's in the title (which would be cruel) I wouldn't worry. The VCAA Language Analyses are quite straightforward

I'll jot down some of my ideas in relation to this. They're kinda vague. I'd probably lean towards dedicating one paragraph going against the prompt, one discussing when conflict reveals the good in society, and one when conflict reveals the bad. Which texts are you doing?
  • Perhaps in conflict there is no clear distinction between what is right or wrong, and it may in fact reveal the moral relativity of the world
  • What is right/wrong is often determined by our world views, and our world views may be elucidated by conflict
  • The mendacious nature of conflict man evoke the worst within people, highlighting what is wrong with the world
  • Effective resolution to conflict requires compromise and understanding, perhaps revealing what is right in the world???

Yeah, these points need to be thoroughly work shopped. But hopefully some help  :)

you could maybe talk about how 'in the world' there's no universal notion of what constitutes morality in times of conflict, and how our perceptions of it are social constructs? and therefore conflict can never truly reveal what's 'right and wrong' because morality is a subjective experience blurred even further within the context of conflict.
i dunno though, i feel like that'd be a lot easier to substantiate in a creative piece than an expository, i can't really think of any solid evidence to support that  :-\ (except for one line in the film paradise road but that was a shit movie)

I'm praying the prompt isn't on conflict resolution- the one that's got me stuck at the moment is 'Some conflicts have a history that make them impossible to resolve'. Would anyone be able to help? Also, is anyone else worried that they don't have enough modern and historical examples ready to go? Ugh, I just want this exam over already!

hey, i had to do this one too!
i did it a while ago, but the ideas i had were:
- Certain ideologies can become engrained in society’s collective psyche to the extent that it becomes impossible to challenge them. When people refuse to re-examine traditional perspectives simply because they are long-established, society itself begins to stagnate.
-Striking comparisons can be drawn between certain conflicts from completely different eras and cultures - the unfortunate implication is that any attempt at resolving conflict is ultimately fruitless, as it is continually destined to repeat itself.
- However, we are often able to learn valuable lessons through our history, allowing us to learn from past mistakes in conflict.
