I'm just glad we're not a few years in where they throw regular curveballs.

ummm I really couldn't write much about the commentary seeing as it was informal written piece (right?) ... although as soon as I saw the australian identity essay in Q9 I was pretty glad :D !

SO HAPPY IT'S OVER!

The essay topics were a godsend. I was praying for a question on national identity!!

Generally a fairly straightforward exam; interesting choice to do a written text for the commentary though... I just discussed stylistic features in paragraph one, coherence in paragraph two, and cohesion in paragraph three. What did everyone else do?

I know right!!? The social harmony topic...exactly what I wanted as I could write on all of my strengths (:

I thought the commentary was fun; looking for all of those features in such a short text was a challenge

Commentary was fun (: I did persuasive techniques, informality and coherence/cohesion.
It was one of the few commentaries I could ever do in 45 minutes. AND it was 3 pages, so I'm happy about the length too.

Could someone help me with deterioration and elevation? I get what they mean but can't really apply them?
Eg. I get that 'hussy' used to have the denotation of 'housewife' but now 'promiscuous woman'; so has deteriorated? because it has a \ pejorative associations?
But I don't really get the other examples such as:
Coke (old denotation- coca cola beverage), (new denotation - any cola beverage) so could someone explain which one it is and why?
Thanks!

What you've mentioned is broadening
FYI the 3/4 course isn't so fussy about these word formation and semantic change processes (:

It's on my 1/2 exam revision sheet? It has a box with broadening, narrowing and shifting which I've done, but the other column says to choose between deterioration and elevation.
Confused :P

I would argue that 'coke' has in fact undergone commonisation, whereby the brand name 'Coca Cola', shortened to 'coke', has come to be used to refer to any cola beverage. Similar case with the Australian slang term 'sheila', meaning a girl, whose origins stem from the actual girl's name 'Sheila'.

Since I'm no good at explaining things, I'll give you some examples of the terms you mentioned :)

Semantic elevation: 'wicked', previously denoting something sinister and unholy, is now akin to things that are 'awesome'. Its meaning has come to adopt a more positive connotation.

Semantic deterioration: 'odour', previously possessing neutral connotations, is now often used to describe unpleasant smells. Its meaning has thus become tainted, and can no longer be said without evoking unpleasant associations.

So coke hasn't deteriorated or elevated?
What about my other examples of words such as"

Meat (old den. any food) (New den. the flesh of dead animals) Has it elevated or deteriorated?
Black (old den. white) (new den. black)
Kleenex (old den. A particular brand of tissues) (new den. any tissues)

I get the whole positive/negative association thing, but can't decide whether the above have a positive or negative one.

Meat has narrowed, from something general to something specific
Black has just shifted
Kleenex is commonisation as a brand name has become something generic
